I had a couple of hours to myself this afternoon and so went for a browse at Camperlands and the Stockport branch of Go Outdoors. Here are a few reflections.

I've recently been sharing opinions with others about the Outdoor Revolution Starcamper 3. It's going for under £70 at Camperlands and it's a REALLY good tent for the money - I'd forgotten how good. It's a real shame that they've not released any tents this year.

The new Vango Orchy is a MUCH improved tent now that the front pole is full length down to the ground - it's much more stable. They've also put partial zips connecting the groundsheet to the tent walls by the front door; I would imagine that this allows you to enlargen the front opening on warm days.

The new angled pole for the eyebrow/side canopy on Outwell Nevada's is a massive improvement and seems to get rid of all the problems that I among others have moaned about. However, the way in which the ends of the pole are attached is completely different so no straight swap is possible. The question is, why did Outwell allow this problem to remain for two seasons? Don't they thoroughly test their products before launching them?

Unfortunately, from what I was told, the Minnesota will not be getting this logical fix this season. Granted it's not quite as much of an issue with the Minnesota as you can cable-tie the black brackets/ferules to the strong steel poles.

Many of the Hi Gear tents that have been re-released this year (e.g. Zenobia, Kalahari and Corado) have been tweaked and, as a resualt, feel a much better product; some nice touches have been added. I also get the impression that the overall quality of the Hi Gear tents is just a bit better than last year.

Finally, I wouldn't be surprised if Outwell's market share goes down a little this year. I'm particularly looking forward to comparing them with Kampa's tents (when they are finally available). But I just feel that quite a few tent manufacturers have made improvements sufficient to sway more potential Outwell buyers.

Hello Former Scout, I was wondering if you could tell me how the angled pole on the  eyebrow/side canopy on Outwell Nevada M 2009 is different from the 2010? I have recently purchased this tent but not sure if I have the 09 or 10. Thanks, Diane

Good observations Scout.

I too have been window shopping tents recently, although I am in the market for a smaller tent this year.

Agree about Hi Gear appearing better this year, but I still think there are a few simple design decisions (like windows or lack there of) that let some otherwise good family tents down).

I've seen more Sunncamp tents this season and they too appear to be getting much better in quality and worth a good look.

I'd love to see some Kampa's on display.

Really disappointed with the Coleman tents this year (although to be fair I haven't seen the "Premium Range" Mackenzie's yet) - but it looks like there has been conscious effort to enter the "budget market" more aggressively which has resulted in cost cutting, which in turn has compromised design and features.

Vango , solid as ever - the Icarus I think will be the best seller this year.

Outwell just more of the same, but still a big high quality hitter to me (Fantasy range a joke though let's be honest) - Nevada M is favourite in my tent quest currently.

A little disappointed that there has been a significant price hike on some tents this year.

A mixed bag for me, but it is good there is still plenty of choice throughout the price range.

Mentioned it on another thread earlier today... The 2010 model has a 3 piece pole above the side door with 2 elbow brakets instead of just 1 pole that you had bend putting lots of stress on the door.

That's precisely it. If your pole is one length of (probably) grey fibreglass then you have last year's. If you have two silver joining brackets to join three shorter lengths then it's this year's.

Hi Audsleyl.

The Hi Gear vis-a-vis tunnel tents (Kalahari and Zenobia) don't have many windows but at least this year the windows are clear and transparent and not that silly frosted/patterned translucent plastic stuff of last year. In the Corado I'm sure they've made alterations to the side windows; each one can be fully zipped open (even the mesh) for those hot summer days that we've had so many of over the last few seasons.

I saw the Icarus 500 in both places and it really is a good tent for the money; one or two corners have been cut but nothing substantial.

The one that really got me was the Sunncamp Evolution 600. It's so much bigger than it appears on publicity photos. The four-poled four-door larger one must be vast. But that 2-berth bedroom pod is too small and that slope at the side/back takes away too much head-height for my liking.

I wonder whether Outwell's Montana wil survive much longer. Many new tents are clearly based on the Montana idea but are introducing tweaks that are beginning to make the Montana look a little tired.......to me!

My second window-shop of the season was today at the Yeomans display at Calver. I came away with one or two additional thoughts.

It would appear as though Outwell have made some changes to the side door eyebrow porch of the Minnesota after all. Unlike in the Nevada they've kept the black ferules into which the ends of the fibreglass poles go but the pole is pre-angled. Unfortunately it's only resulted in a limited improvement. At the end of the day, with the Minnesota the problem is not so much with the bent pole as the black ferules putting the strain on the fabric and zip of the tent and not on those strong steel poles. This is all down to the piece of the woven fabric strip from the ferule to the pole being the wrong length w.r.t. the length of the woven strip from the ferule to the tent material. Come on Outwell, it's not rocket science!!

The Outwell Virginia 5, exclusive to Yeomans, is a good tent. Shame there's not dedicated extension.

As someone else has already observed, the groundsheets on the Outwell River tents are not as good as the Lake tents, but they are much better than the standard synthetic tents. I'd still go for the Lakes, however.

I like the Outwell Oakland XL, but you can see why it's cheaper than the Minnesota; it is a compromise but possibly one worth making.

I really rather liked some of the Coleman tents, for example the MacKenzies and the Evanstans. Just a shame that there are no dedicated canopies or extensions.

I was again struck by how much better the Vango Orchy is with the couple of alterations that have been made. I also like the Maritsa - it's different but not for the sake of being so.

And so on to Sprayway. It would appear that they've conquered the quality controll issues of when they first introduced tents and it's clear that they put quite a bit of thought into their designs. But for some reason I just can't warm to them. I don't know whether it's the colour scheme or what but I just can't see myself buying one.

And finally......why can't I afford a Wolf Lake?

Another excellent report Scout.

I went to Calver last Friday. I pretty much agree with all you say.

For some reason the Outwell Virginia 5 didn't do it for me, but the price is very good.

I like the Coleman Mackenzie's very much and I'm glad the Weathermaster gets a worthy successor. They'd be high on my list if I was shopping for a "large" tent.

The Sprayway's just don't do it for me either. Its a style thing that just doesn't "click" with me (but I used to think that about Sunncamp tents, and they grew on me in the end - I now think they have "cutting edge" style).

My tent hunt is over now. Got Fforest Fields booked for a long weekend at the end of the month for the maiden voyage of what will be our new "weekender"; an Outwell Nevada M. Hopping to pick one up and save a few quid using some Go Outdoors discount vouchers (but I'm not holding my breath on the chances of a discount).

Edit: I'd love a Bear Lake 4, but too much money, too big for the car and too heavy

Your only regret about Fforest Fields is that you are only going for a long weekend and not longer; it's a wonderful campsite, very well run and a lovely atmosphere (cue Russ Abbot song: "Atmosphere!  I love a campsite with a happy atmosphere!").  Tell them that Former Scout from Glossop sends his best and that I hope to be there in the not-too-distant future.

What does it for me with the Virginia, as with many of Outwell's tents, is the windows.  It means that even if you are trapped inside because of rain or midges you can still have a good view of the scenery around you.

What does it for me with the Virginia, as with many of Outwell's tents, is the windows.

Spot on! If there is one thing I like most about the Outwell Miny, Nevada, Carolina, Oakland et al "shape" is the "front design", and the windows. Plus they generally have good extension canopies.

Fforest fields will be great, I'll name drop you whenever the opportunity arises.
