Hi All

I have a bit of a situation with my Hartford L and would really appreciate some help.

Basically, I have used this tent once and the poles were dropped when packing the car (on concrete) - this resulted in a few (don't know how many) of the cords snapping.

So, I've taken them in to a repair shop - the whole bag - and they agreed to sort through them, and work out what was what, and put the correct sections back to together with new cords.

Anyway, the repairers have now phoned to say to say the sections contained in the bag could not be correct.  Two of the sections were too short, and they have had to replace them with longer sections.  They did say they checked with a show ground, who had the same tent up, and they were sure they were wrong and these new longer sections were required.

The thing is I'm almost 100% certain that all the right sections were in the bag - they were in my friends garage briefly but I don't see how he could have mixed them up or swapped them about with his other tent - apart from anything else, he other tent didn't have broken poles!  I just don't really see how that could have happened.

So, because I'm not trusting the repairer I need to get hold of the total lenghts of the poles for this tent.

I've looked at the Outwell website but the tent spec's don't go to that level of detail.

I am going to put the tent up this weekend, as a test run, but I'd rather not unpack the whole thing if I can establish in advance that the poles are wrongly put back together.  And I certainly don't want to damage the tent by trying to use poles that could be too long!

If anyone can help - or point me in the direction of someone else who can help - I will be eternally grateful!

Thanks in advance - Steph :-)

I'm confused....did you actually pitch the tent before the poles were damaged? If so was it all OK then?   Did you buy the tent new?

I don't see how dropping poles onto concrete would break the shock cords, it might well damage fibreglass poles but why would the cord break?

It might be worth trying to ask the manufacturer Outwell?  Not sure how easy that is to do?  Or go back to the place where you bought it and ask them to measure pole length?  Or hope some nice kind person on this forum can measure their tent pole lengths of the same tent.  We have an XL so can't really help.  Are you thinking that the tent repairer has done something - replaced the poles with the wrong length?  All sounds a bit odd as replacing poles with new shock cord is a relatively easy job.

Hmmmmm!  Good luck with that one!

Hi Steph, in your tent bag you are supplied with extra lengths as spares.  However, when I recently had to have mine repaired the broken poles were not the same length as the spares supplied by Outwell.  You are right to be cautious as the incorrect length of pole will cause you problems.  You dont say how old your Hartford is as the model changed in 2008 using different types of pole and causing mega problems.  I am afraid Outwell will not deal with the general public directly as I tried to contact them also but if you go to the webiste a list of camping centres and suppliers is available.  They are all graded by Outwell and I would go to one which has the highest grade by Outwell ad closest to you.  I have done this and found the people at the camping centre helpful and knowledgeable. Good luck

Thanks for the replies guys.

Piglet - yes we did buy the tent new, and did have it up, and all was fine.

Others have been suprised that the cords broke like they did ... but they did.  The whole bag was dropped on the ends where the cords are exposed, so I think maybe the weight caused the metal parts to sever the cords.

Thinking about what Judith has said, the spares would have been in the bag too - so I am wondering if the man at Yeomans used the spares (incorrectly) to put one pole back together, and was then left with an incorrect set for another.   It's a possibility.

I'm just really stuck now, because I don't want to risk trying to put it up with wrong pole lenghths and damaging the tent ...

The only other option is to get a whole new set of poles!!

Arrrggghhhh!!

Just go carefully when you try to pitch it, it *should* be fairly obvious if you've got too much pole.

Hi All

Few months on - tent finally pitched (in garden) and all was fine.  Phew ...

Big hooray to the yeomans guy who fixed the poles ... I should have trusted him!

Pity it's nearly end of the season now but looking forward to camping in it next weekend - and next year!!

Steph :-)
