Can anyone help me with some info on the Khyam branded tents.

I've been looking on-line at the Harewood and think that this would suit my requirements really well ie large tent that can be errected easily single handedly. I've previously owned a Khyam Ridgi-Pod so have some experience of the QE system

I tried to view one today at a local dealer who has a good display of tents and used to stock Khyam. He told me that Khyam have gone into liquidation (I knew that) and that the owner has now set up on his own and is selling the Khyam brand on-line. He told me that since then the quality has suffered with the fabric quality having dropped from 4000 to 2000 hydrostatic head. He also told me I would notice a definate drop in quality and because of this dealers in the UK will no longer stock the Khyam brand, therefore I would never get to see one on display in the UK.

I'm inclined to question that as there seem to be plenty of UK dealers still selling them on-line, many of them large reputable companies. Also I thought the hydrostatic head thing changed a few years ago from 4000 to 2000,

I know there are lots of Khyam enthusiasts out there and wondered if anyone can offer any more infomation/advice on this. Maybe I am cynical to think that the salesman could just have been giving me a load of waffle in an attempt to convince me to buy one of his non-Khyam branded tents. (I didn't see anything there I really liked that was suitable anyhow).

It's the Harewood, in particular that interests me and I would also think of adding a Classic Annexe for more living space when needed.

Also anyone know of any dealers in Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire who have one on display that I could go and view as I'd really like to see one in the flesh before I buy. The fact they went into liquidation alone does not deter me. It's what I was told re the quality having since suffered that is my concern & like I said, my memory is telling me that the hydrostatic rating changed some time ago - but I could be wrong on this.

Thanks for reading.

Is Taunton too far?  Might be worth giving Somerset Camping a ring:

You will find that the dealers that have stock will be 2009 stock they are trying to shift.

I don't mind buying from 2009 stock, but want to look at one. Yes will try if nothing closer, had that in mind as a back up.
It's the quality bit that concerns me!
Anyone know the hydrostatic head of the ridgi-pod tents - I thought this was 2000?

We have a Ridgipod and an older Frontier - approx '99 model year?(must sell......), which one of the Burgundy tents (still the colour for a proper Khyam if you ask me).

The material in the Ridgipod is certainly of a lighter weight than of the Frontier. Dunno about the HH. THen agin I think a lot of rubbish is talked about HH anyway. I've never had any decent tent , of whatever make, leak through the material itself

Your man is getting confused between the old burgundy 4 ounce fabric tents and the later model green/grey ones and current blue ones which are 2 ounce.. nowt to do with hydrostatic head.

We've just bought an '09 Aspen from JR Leisure and the HH is 5000 apparently. Our old '02 XXL is still with us (sentimental value) and it never let us down and in the 7 years we've had it, it's been to the moon and back !! We also have a green 2 oz annexe for the XXL which is not as dark inside as the main tent. JR Leisure are selling Harewoods on The Bay under the seller name JRstores for not a lot of money and having exprerience of Rapidex QE systems like you do, I wouldn't hesitate to get one online. JR Leisure are now joint owners of both Khyam and Wynnster I believe.

I don't have a 'newer' Khyam but have one of the old burgundy ones which is a monster! When we were camping with it a couple of years ago in very, very windy conditions it didn't budge.  The people next to us got soaked and damaged and went out and bought a new Khyam tunnel type tent.  I'm nowhere near an expert but to me the material was a downgrade on ours and flapped about a lot.  However, it lasted the wind and rain.  So in summary, there appears to be no difference in its waterproofing level but don't expect the material to be as good as the old burgundy ones!  Good luck

Jr  leisure are just a dealership who bought  most of the clearance tents from Kyham. They don't own Kyham or Wynnster.

Ok, just repeating what the manager of the Leicester store told me is all.

Thanks everyone.

I have bitten the bullet and ordered the Harewood, annexe, groundsheets for both and a carpet for £557,97 without actually seeing it in the flesh, I know the old XL so am pretty sure it will be OK, plus I now know that it's the same fabric weight as my old Ridgi-pod so assume the quality will be the same as that. I went for the green/grey 2010 colours purely cos I couldn't find a blue annexe and wanted it all to match.

It should be here Friday and hopefully we'll have a trial run pitching it over the weekend.

I realise that this is far too late but don't buy it!! I have had Khyam tents all of my camoping life (over 20 years) but my last will BE my LAST! It is the Harewood. The bedroom roofs puddle, the joints snap... we lost FOUR in one trip! The zips jam EVERY time and the peg points on the fly sheet are of such a poor standard that we've split the tent three times now and lost one loop from the main door also, which means you trip every time you enter as it's too high! Do not buy this tent!
Khyam were less than helpful last year (although they did send me two parcels of joints to the campsite), but they took my tent away afterwards and basically told me that there was nothing wrong with it! I'm just about to write to them again regarding the latest trip and the new tears, but am quite sure I'll get the same response as last time.
POOR STANDARD. LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE! WILL NEVER BUY KHYAM AGAIN!!!

I do not know of any dealers in Wiltshire, as the OP has already found out Khyam is selling their tents directly to the public themselves, probably to cut down on cost.

Although I have not come across the newer tents in the past couple of months, I have seen at least one of their drive away tents for motorhomes per site during my last 3 trips this year. They seem to be quite popular.

My Freelander was purchased before Khyam went into liquidation and started to sell their tents directly to the public. Therefore, I cannot comment on the quality of new tents, sorry.

We bought the Ontario 8 back in 2007 from a  local dealer and I recently bought the 4 berth Nevada direct from Khyam.

Both are tunnel tents, both have the same quality fabric flysheet with 5000HH rating and I am delighted with both of them.
I certainly haven't noticed a deterioration of quality or service and would certainly buy another of their products.

I've owned my Kyham Harewood & annexe for just over a year now and love it. I have owned Khyam branded tents before and can't say I personally have noticed any deterioration in quality. Also I have found Khyam to be very helpful when I needed to contact them with queries. I guess we all speak as we find.

I can virtually pitch this tent alone. My 10 year old helps me to raise the centre hub while I snap the leg joints into place, but other than that I can manage single handed in calm weather. Only thing I can fault it on is the sheer size/weight of the tent packed, but then I knew what I was getting into with that as I had owned a ridgi dome before.

All in all very happy & definately feel I made the right choice for us.
