So, having proudly bought my Monty 6 today it seems that a tent carpet is a good thing to add.  Don't want to spend another £80 on this - is it possible to get a general tent carpet.  I really don't care too much about branding on this item - just the general benefits.  It seems like I would need one near to or smaller than 4m x 3.5m.  Anyone come across such a thing - have done a quick google and haven't struck oil so thought I would yet again try my trusty experts.

They seem to be bespoke for each tent made by the manufacturers, there's no 'plain label' ones!

You may find one with similar dimensions from a different make, but it's doubtful you would make any savings anyway

They don't seem to come much cheaper on ebay either

We are in the same position, so many things to buy for our trips that a branded carpet for our tent isnt an option at the moment.

We are keeping an eye out for an end of line one of similar size and their are two other generic types: 1) kampa easy tread and 2) Weaveatex Breathable.....even with these you wont get much change out of £40....

The Horizon 8 carpet is probably one of  the cheapest and largest out there (and not better or worse quality than the other manufacturers from what I've seen, in my opinion).

I bought one for my Weathermaster (which doesn't have a Coleman carpet), but it still is a bit smaller then the tent living area.

It fits perfectly in my new Nevada M when you fold it under itself to fit in the tapered front corners - so it's done a double job well, and saved a few quid.

But going back to the OP's original point, I just know there will be some tent carpet like material off the roll, routinely produced in the textiles industry, that will be peanuts in price compared to the price "official" tent carpets go for (and I exclude picnic rugs as counting, unless to can buy off the roll by the square meter). I will concede that tent carpets have backing material and sealed edges, but I bet the price of a "off the roll" generic material would make this "finishing" academic.

The problem you will have Audsleyl is that most fabric off the roll is only 150 wide and there are not many tents that narrow so you will need to join 2 or more sections to begin with and if you are going to use a cheep fleece type fabric it will need to be double locked and flat stitched or it will easily pull apart, nature of the fabric. 

Secondly the backing to most "off the roll" material, if you can find it ! is open cell foam which is very flimsy so it will pull apart and break up after being walked over a few times.

Then you have the backing, this is there for 2 reasons, (a) to keep the face side dry and (b) to help keep the carpet stable and in place rather than ruching up when walked on. Now you can use a tarp type material but you need to join it to the face fabric or it will "walk" the top will slide over the base causing it to slip when walked on and cause the edges to curl. So you need to bond or stitch it all together.

Finally binding, yes you need to bind it otherwise it will all start to come apart and believe me trying to do binding without a proper binding attachment neatly is not as simple as it looks.

So can you make a carpet cheaper than the big name ones .... yes if you buy the materials in mass and have the equipment, but there is the next problem, the fabric for the big name carpets is very cheep low quality and you try and buy that sort of material off the roll, its made for them at a price.
