I have just brought a carolina3 for my daughter, thats last years model same as carolina m. Yes it is easy to put up and its a study tent in a bit of wind. Have not seen a carolina with side extension yet but it be a worthwhile addition to a great tent.

Like floggitt above ive got a Carolina 3 which i used extensively last year - stood up to some strong winds with no problems. I pitch the tent solo in about 10-15 mins - its easy with practice. Great tent - not sure about the side extension, I bought a Michigan extension for mine which with some addittional strapping fits on the front end and makes a huge difference to the tent.

We have the Carolina M and its only 20cm in length less than the 'L' so if you're going to take out one sleeping pod then you're only gaining that 20cm in the living area.
The plus side with the M rather than the L is it has more windows, a panoramic view if you like with the option to close them off if need be and the living area is very generous for 3 people i think theres a 20 pounds difference so in effect a pound per cm lol
