Following our trip at the weekend to the Ripley tent exhibition, we are now in the throes of looking into purchasing a new camping abode.
We firstly looked at a Sprayway, which fulfilled all the criteria, but after seeing the Outwell tents, the Sprayway just looked really shoddy and not very good quality. Even one of the sales advisors told us to stay clear of it.
Then I fell in love with the Outwell Vermont XL. We asked about the L model, but I think the price difference dowsnt reflect the size difference and we may aswell pay the extra and get the larger one. But Im worried it would be TOO large.
Just seen a Hi Gear Corado 6 which is a little smaller than the Vermont, and looks fab, especially as it has the built in canopy (cooking in the Vermont in the rain would concern me as there is no shelter once the door is open). But is it a good quality tent? I've read the reviews and it seems great. Just wondering if it's worth a trip to Leeds to have a nosy at it in Go Outdoors (if they have it displayed in there).

I so The High Gear Coraoda at Go Blackburn On Sunday,It looked excellent,I cant comment on the quality though,as we have The Outwell Florida 6 and trimmings, what a fantastic piece of Kit.I cant think of any bad points to be honest,If you get chance have a look at one,you wouldnt be dissapointed!!
Hi Gear is Go Outdoors own in-house brand. I think...not 100% sure...they're made by Gelert and rebadged. On the quality scale they're not rated as high as say Outwell, Vango or Coleman, but they're still well made tents.
Worth an outing to take a look (Pudsey, Wakefield and Sheffield have them on display, but phone first).
Yes, they are re-branded (or specially made for Go) Gelerts. I think you get quite a bit of tent for the money on some models. Can't comment on the Corado as I've only quickly looked at one.
Whilst I'd describe the quality as average to above average, they are not as good as an Outwell.
Thanks guys (and girls). I just cant find one tent that meets all my criteria - I dont think it exists! lol We had a chat last night and think that if we can possibly afford it then the Outwell would be the better choice. Not rushing into anything though so will try to get over to have a look at the Corado anyway.
We have just bought the Hi Gear Kalihari 10 , it say's it's 3000HH so hopefully it will be fine , you get massive internal space and four bedrooms and all for £189........can't be bad
I've got the Corado 6 and I think it's great. It's not the same quality as say an Outwell but for the price we paid (think it was £250 plus another £50 for the extension) you can't really fault it. Think the Hi Gear tents are usually rebranded Gelerts.

I think the saying goes you get what you pay for!! Outwell v Hi Gear - no comparison - Outwell = quality - Hi Gear = budget.
I do agree to a point. I have an Outwell myself, but I wouldn't knock the quality of the Hi Gear tents. They are Gelert tents in the end who are a reputable company. I also have a Gelert Meridian 8, which is a Kalahari, and it is a perfectly fine family tent. There is much much worse out there than Hi Gear. The latest deal on the Kalahari 10 for £190 is imo the best bargain that you will see in 2010.

I am of the same opinion as racey1979 on this , i had an Outwell Idaho last season and it was a cracker of a tent and i do think Outwell is better quality that's not in question , but going by the reviews/ratings on here (9.5 out of ten ) the main Hi Gear tents ( the Zenobia and the Kalihari ) come up smelling of roses , all you want really from a tent is that it will keep you dry and let you sleep comfortably ,I could have bought any tent i wanted but i really couldn't see a downside to the Kalihari 10 at £189..................obviously i will know better if it leaks on our first trip.......lol but if you look at all the reviews and posts there are plenty of Outwell and other top makes that cost 3x what the Hi Gear costs and they have leaked water or had some other kind of problem so just because it's dearer doesn't mean it's better .
+1. I speak as a Vango user with plenty of Outwell equipment, and as a BL6 wannabe. I could spend £800 on that tent and still have quality issues. Paying top money is no guarantee of a quality experience, as the many posts here on their stitching/leaking/poles testifies. That said, I'd buy a BL like a shot if funds allowed, and hope I'd get a good 'un.
We all want to get the best we can with the budget we've got. From another of the OP's posts they've had a bit of luck and are going Outwell anyway and I'm sure it will work out.
The original question was about the quality of Hi Gear tents. As they're made by Gelert I think they're reasonable quality for the money as the reviews confirm.
We got a Kalahari 10 last week. We saw this one, Vango and Outwell tents. Didn't notice a right lot of difference in the quality. Put it this way seeing the Kalahari 'in the flesh' did not put us off buying it. It all seems really good quality to me. We've put it up once and need more practice but the material was nice, the rain we were putting it up in -idoits- gathered on it until we put it up and none of it got through, the flexi poles were fine, as novice campers we were amazed at how much they can bend to get the pins in them (gulp!) We read the reviews here, looked at photos, saw the tent 3 times before buying and as some people will know went round in cicles looking what to buy. We got the Kalahari 10 for £189, great for us but I see they are £359.99 now. So I think we did really well and it seems great value, don't think Go Outdoors would stock low quality tents surely?
We had particular criteria to meet too and this one suited us perfectly and as the price was right we went for it.
See our pic in my gallery on how big it is!
