We're looking for a quick-erect day/utility tent to use in conjunction with our roof tent. We need it for shelter and a good awning to cook under in case of rain. Any advice will be gratefully received.

The Outdoor Revolution Outhouse goes up very quickly and we really liked ours until I decided to replace it with a frame based kitchen tent.

The Khyam Utility/Shower tent has their special quick to put up system. It's only £50 too which I think is great for what you get. Just check the dimensions against the table or camp kitchen stand you want to use. If it's something a bit bigger you want, the Outdoor Revolution outhouse is brilliant, big enough for a small table and chair too.

Then, for bigger again, look at something like the Royal Dayroom, most brands have their own dayroom, it's gazebo sized, designed for cooking and eating in....like a dining room.

Wouldn't fancy the site fees for a day room though! Talking of which, many sites charge extra for a utility tent. A way round that is to get a canopy for your tent, then it's considered part of your tent and you don't get charged extra.

hi we have just bought a quechua secoonds base for this purpose...going to use it first time this week...

It is brilliant from what I have seen...really easy to put up...porch hoods over 2 doors and one window so that you can go out leaving the mesh windows open without worrying about rain..

It has also given us much more flexibility...as it pops up you can pop it up first when you arrive if it is raining and set up stuff from there and vice versa on the packing up return trip....and after you have already put up one tent you just have to pop this one...

Will see how it works this weekend...but so far i am really impressed.

Thanks all. Ill have a look at all of them.

CJ please let me know how you get on with the seconds base. Just had a look on-line. I'm not sure the porches will give much cover for barbecuing in the rain or strong sun though. Tell me what you think. Would you cook inside?

I wouldn't barbecue inside anything. I keep barbecueing for the dry evenings and do that outdoors only.

But you can cook inside a utility tent or a canopy though, using a stove or mini oven or whatever you normally use.

The Khyam Screenhouse is a quick to pitch day room and you can canopy out one of the sides if you want (two, if you buy extra king poles) to create more shade or a bigger covered seating area.

Yes, I agree. I am one of those odd types who BBQ all year round (Christmas dinner even). So I am looking for a day tent with a decent awning which I'm happy to BBQ under.

What about this? We've just  bought one. You need to buy extra poles to canopy out the doorway, but they are cheap enough (have a look here).

Hmm I think you might need to think about what you REALLY want to achieve from this tent. If you want quick pitch then you're in the realms of the Base and the Khyam, but if you want to look at canopies and the like you're probably into more standard four pole constructions.

We have a Sunncamp dayroom, I'm not sure if the model is still available. We've used it to cook in and as living space and it's been fantastic.

I'm not sure I'd BBQ in it though, I'd be much too worried about sparks damaging the fabric and smoking us all out - we also BBQ all year around but we do it outside even if that means an umbrella!

You can put the door up as a canopy but it's quite low (I think I have to duck under it and I'm 5ft 3 but I might be wrong - we haven't used it for a year or two and we rarely canopy the door as I don't think it adds much) and you'd still be at risk of damaging your canopy door with sparks.   We use the Cadac and the Coleman stove inside but stick with BBQ'ing outside.

As far as sun shelter goes, our dayroom is great for this as you can open up all of the sides and then drop the one that the direct sunlight is coming though so that you can always create shade if you have someone like me that doesn't "do" sun. Look at models that have doors that have the option of windows and mesh so that you get flexibility depending on the weather.
