Hello,
Have just got back from a camping weekend in Eype where my lovely outwell colorado 5 tent got completely smashed in the very high winds there. Luckily we were camping with friends who could put us up in their massive vango 900. Anyway, we now need a new tent and my priority is to have a porch, sewn in groundsheet and to fit a family of 4 (so 5-6 berth.) Some friends have got the vango diablo 600 which seems to fit the bill nicely - if we can find one, but I just wondered if any of you lovely people could recommend something similar??

many thanks

Jacks

My friends have the vango diablo 600 DLX and it is fab, I'm quite jealous as it didn't cost them much either. The only downside is that it is really huge, and an odd shape. But it has an extra large porch which is great.

thanks for that, actually I've just been checking the tent reviews here and it's the vango diablo 400 I'm thinking about which is the smaller version but still seems to have loads of living space for 4 (althouth I'm not sure about the bedroom size).

Hi Jacks, which site did you stay at?

As I am abut to book Highlands at Eype, quite a few reviews have mentioned about the strong winds, are there any sheltered pitches, or should I pick somewhere else?

Cheers

Donna

Yes it was the Highlands end campsite and it is in a beautiful location with fantastic views. The non electric pitches are at the end of the site in quite an exposed position and there were about 4 tents that got completely trashed (they were all tunnel tents of varying sizes!.) It was exceptionally gusty so you might want to check the forecast before you book. There were some other pitches away from the cliff edge which may be more protected but the wind was coming from all directions so we were all getting a buffeting. Good Luck!

Hope you salvaged a few spares? Most folk usually remember to keep the pegs but pole sections, guylines, inners, toggles, sliders and a chunk of groundsheet are also worth salvaging. I hardly ever have to buy spares...I just check out the campsite bins the morning after a windy night. People dump perfectly sound tents just because of a couple of broken poles!

Actually, I can understand that. If you've just had a horrible experience in your tent weatherwise then you probably just want to put it behind you, or in the bin, and get home as fast as possible.

I can sypathise too, but I still wouldn't throw a £500 tent in a campsite bin because of it. (Someone else got there first, alas. I was chatting to him about it later.)

Thanks for that Jacks, the weather looks ok for this weekend (tops gusts of 15mph) and 23 .

Silly question, my other half is rather particular about the ole toilet and Shower facilities, are they any good. We went to what we thought wa sa beautiful site last year in Dartmouth, and the facilities were awful and you had to pay for the privilage!!!

Cheers

Donna

I'm a bit of a dirty camper myself and tend to rely on the ol' wet wipes but my other half had a shower and it was fine, with plenty of toilets, and wash cubicles too. There tended to be a bit of a queue first thing for the showers so timing is important.

Tis a lovely site with walks all around and a steep walk straight to the beach. Good pub too in the village.

If the weather is going to be fine, I'd definitely recommed it!

Sadly my lovely outwell colorado was thoroughly smashed, every metal pole bent in two, and all the other ones splintered. We did cut off all the guy ropes and save the pegs and ground sheet though.

Still not sure about next tent- all the latest seem to be variations of tunnel tents which I am a bit reluctant to buy again.
