Hi Paul,
There was the odd pole last year that was to long and put too much pressure on the side door. Sounds like your's is experiencing the same issue.
Indeed the simplest fix is to take the black plastic ends off the pole and take a centremetre off each end with a junior hacksaw, file and then put the black bungs back on.

I had the exact same problem with the nevada xl canopy pole being too long.
it snapped, we got a replacement, that snapped too.
in the end , I made my own out of some spare fibreglass poles off an old beach shelter.
I made it an inch or 2 shorter than the original and had no problem with it afterwards.
Wrap a bit of masking tape around the pole before you cut it, to help stop splintering
