Right, I've finally cracked and taking my son camping - he loves the outdoors but going to do a bit of a tester run for a night at somewhere local so if I crack we can scurry off home in the dead of night!

The wife is staying at home with the very little 'un so just me and him. If anyone can recommend anywhere that allows a little fire in West Sussex that is just a pitch up and go affair I'd be grateful...

Kit wise I've got a Vango Kairos 400, an Outwell selef inflate mat for me and a Kampa Junior bed for him. I'm using my old khyam sleeping bag but does anyone know if the outwell dino kid's bags are any good? Other than taht just a quick portable stove and a lantern and I think I'm set!

Anyone with experience of camping with kids recommend anoything else?

Thanks, Mike

I wouldn't go for the outwell bag myself.  We use the Vango Baby bag for our (just) 2 year old.  He loves it and it doesn't drown him. Anything bigger I would worry about him sliding down inside it.  We also use the same Kampa bed as you and it is excellent.  We wrap it in a big fleece blanket with the ends underneath to give him a bit of extra insulation.

As for campsites in West Sussex, I live there but we always head out a bit further so I have no idea

We have tried a Vango midi with our kids (5 and 3) and they didnt like it. They want to go back to quilts and blankets, I am tempted to get them an Outwell square sleeping bag(becomes quilt if needs be) and take some blankets

We always take favourite bedtime toys/books and bike/trike. Whenever possible we look for a site with some tarmac to pedal/scoot

Also suggest getting on site early on first day to explore and wearing the fella out. We aim to get ours 'dead on their feet' for 8:30 and bedtime is a breeze - otherwise they are too excited

A wee dram is handy once they are asleep
