1. I've always used Vango tents and they are highly reccomended.

2. If you buy a Halford's or Argos tent it won't be the end of the world as most people buy gear then upgrade it as and when they need or have the money.

3.If at all possible look for a camping shop that displays tents so you can see them in the flesh and decide for yourself, thats how we chose ours.

4. If there's 4 of you don't buy a 4 berth tent get a 5 or 6 berth for the extra sleeping space.

I had one of those Halford's tents - £100 I think for a 4 man vis a vis tent with sleeping bags, mats and lights. Only bought it for festivals but it wasn't even fit for that. The big carry bag broke pretty much straight away (the seams just unstitched themselves and the handles tore off). I don't know the technical term, but two of the fastenings for the inner tents tore off during what I would call normal use. This is after 4 nights' use..! We took it back and got a refund with no hassle.

Definitely a good illustration of the difference between low price and good value.

We started camping with a Halfords tent. It did us three trips over two years and is still as good as new. We had a lot of rain last year too and apart from a bit of ingress at the base of the door (due to no SIG) stayed very dry as well. It was only 50 quid and we were completely happy with it, and without being able to buy a cheap 'try-out' tent we probably would have never started camping.

We have decided to upgrade though as we wanted a larger tent we could stand up in and that had a SIG - also this summer my 13-yr-old daughter is coming with us for the first time.

So we have upgraded to a Vango Icarus 500 but I think we'll be keeping the Halfords tent maybe for festivals or weekends away.

Have a look on eBay, preloved and your local paer and see how many people are selling the Argos/Halfords tents and you'll realise that people don't keep them. Why? Because they've either decided to up[grade because they are rubbish or they've given up camping after a bad experience caused by a rubbish tent!

Buy it cheap, buy it twice. Spend the £200 on a well known name with a good review and you can't go far wrong. Vango Icarus 500/600 will be a good place to start. If you can splash out for a canopy too then you'll definately reap the benefits.

Erm, Argos do sell branded tents you know, they sell Regatta (fine tents, well mine is), Coleman, Vango, Lichfield & one of the Outwell sub-brands. So to say "don't buy a tent from Argos" is misleading to say the least, not to mention misinformed.
