We have an excellent Outwell Vermont XL! It's top class and fantastic for space. However we also purchased and side extenstion and i have never seen such a rubish design.
You can tell it is designed for the Vermont L as it does not stretch over the whole of the wider XL (dont buy one if you have the XL), the wind gets under it and the whole tent is banging and stretching and trying to rip.
However has any one used the new side awning on the XL. Is it the same where the wind can get under it. Can any one send photos of one attached to the XL and how it attaches. I would like to see how it is tied down on the far side away from the awning.
Any advice please?
Thanks

I don't think it's significantly better on the Vermont L to be honest. The wind still manages to get underneath it and make a lot of noise. In my opinion, Outwell should not have the extension go over the top of the main tent; rather, it should be designed to just clip to the side. The guyings/fixings are poor quality on ours too; one of the attaching clip's [for the tent poles] straps is down to threads, as is one of the guy ropes.
Out of 35+ camping trips I'd guess at using it for 10 days. It often doesn't work for us because we usually have to pitch to allow room for the extension on a certain side of the tent only for the weather to change and mean we never use it! :)
I'm not sure if this is an earlier version than the 2010. I meant to take pictures last time we went. Will rmember for next time. The anchors on mine easily reach the floor on the other side of the Vermont XL. I also saw other posts about big gaps. These you can minimise. I'll describe what we do. Maybe it will help.
Lean the extension up against the Vermont with or without poles inserted. Take straps over the top and clip at the floor into main steel rings where the Vermont poles end. Stretch the two elastic end ropes over I think it is 4 poles (could be 3). Now clip extension to Vermont poles and turn them around to wrap the extension material slightly around the main Vermont poles so the only remeaining gap is between the main vermont poles and vermont tent. This is the same then as if the extension is clipped to the main tent as mentioned above. Then erect extension. This keeps the whole thing taught and pretty draft free. Its worked so far for us this season for 4 camps. Maybe at 35 camps ours will show signs of wear too.
Thanks for that, when we put our side awning up, the bit that went across the roof was only wide enough for the Vermont not the xl. This meant wind could get under it. I would love to see pictures when you go camping next. Bet it's a massive tent when set up!
Wife said cant have one until we have seen it works! :-(

I realise I have a couple of photos, just uploaded to the Vermont XL gallery. Hope they help. One side is a bit obscured by our car, sorry. Hope they help.
