Ok, here's the secenario.

Family of 4, kids are 5&8, one of each flavour. Our beloved Monty 6 is now 5yrs old and has served us very well but is getting a little tired. We have upgraded over the years so added the carpet, then the extension and this year the awning - which is just fab. Kids share and when eldest decides against it he can have a pop up pup tent. Would fit nicely in the Monty awning to begin with!

Will continue to use the Monty as we weekend tent with or without awning/extension as suits.

We usually spend 2 - 3 weeks camping in France every summer (this yr Dordogne) and have been toying with buying a polycotton or canvas tent for the summer trips.

So... suggestions please. We don't really want anything that is significantly bigger than the Monty 6. Currently toying with a Bear lake 6 but concerned that it is a 4+2 rather than 3+3. Like the idea that we could cobble our Monty awning on the front of a BL6.

What is the thing with Cabanon - so many devotees here please share the experience. If they are the bees knees then which one?

In terms of camping habits that always help guide tent choice  - we are using EHU for the time this yr and then only to power a fridge (Waeco CF 35 - thanks for all the advice on that - it is fab!). We sleep on fat airics, sit on moon chairs and cook on a calor double burner and charcoal BBQ.

Will probably buy another Monty when ours finally gives up the ghost but are prepared to invest in a good quality tent for the big summer trips abroad.

Thanks in anticpation.

Simon

Cabanon used to build some of the nicest Frametents you could get in the UK, but frame tents (or Bungalow tents as our EU friends call them) seem to be out of fashion

Cabanon materials and workmanship were pretty much spot on. The Pyramids are fantastic (though we bought Obelink as even s/h they are pricey) and Biscaya etc do give you all the quality advantages with modern design

We have an A series Frame tent that is about 8yrs old and it looks as good as new. To buy new they are £1000+ now though. Advantages are really practical shape and strong steel frame. Cotton (and roof liners) mean it is nice and cool. Disadvantages are 45kg of canvas and poles (BIG pole bag!) and not that much fun to put up or pack away

Good luck with the tent hunt, always exciting time

If you have a big budget Karsten are top notch too

Thanks - am prepared to pay for quality as this is a many year plan.

We reckon we have had over 130 nights out of our Monty in 5 years so put that way the cost per night is low!

averaging 4 weeks a year camping, I am most envious

what are you views of preferred tent shape ?

Frametents and Cabanon Biscaya give tall space most everywhere. But we are real fans of the Dutch Pyramid tents (sometimes called storm tents)

De Waard make the most gorgeous ones, with models like the Albatros, but you get slopy bedroom ceiling and a very non-mainstream shape - both of which may not appeal. If it does ESVO are good too

One place I know of (from hunting down Canvas a new ridge tent) are these guys, they do some nice, less mainstream Canvas

How about a Maritsa 700 or a Tigris 600, both would  give you the amount of room that you have become accustomed to and being from Vango they are both quality tents in their own right. You may find that as they are easier and quiker to put up than the Monty that you will use them for short breaks and rely on the monty (new or old one) for the longer trips. Either way they are both great tents and deserve further investigation.

Really not worried about the shape, infact I think we would quite like a quirky tent. Amazing how much of a workinig day can be spent looking at tents on t'internet!

We have just swapped our Ohio for the BL6...I can see what you mean about the bedrooms...we have 3 kids...2 are in the 2 berth and the little one is with us in the 4 berth. We were thinking that when they are older there are always pup tents as well...

The fact that you already have the ext and the awning means you can make a massive set up and have more use out of what you have....

with Outwell you of course get the best carpets...according to what I have read on here and the other extras such as the windows and light holders...I am not sure if these are important things or not though for you...But we have just swopped our Outwell Ohio for a BL6 and I wanted to stay with Outwell because we were used to those extras!!!!!

happy looking...it is always fun looking round.....

I've got one of these... 6 berth Polycotton for a fraction of the price of a Cabanon(I've also got one of those but prefer SIG) £195.00(free postage). See review section.

Thanks - still interested in the BL6
Am really interested in how they perform in the heat - feel reassured that the rain isn't going to be a problem.
Where can I look at a Cabanon?

UK cabanon dealers

Biscaya 500 is a lovely tent, but maybe a little over priced - would imagine if a dealer had stock in a couple of months you could make them an offer though

Had a wander (tent stalk) round a Yeomans tent show last week.  The difference in temperature between the canvas and man made fibre tents was unreal.  It was a good hot day but inside the canvas tents it was cooler, inside the others it was very hot.

hi in regards to heat... we have our BL6 in the garden at the moment in south Germany...surrounded by flies and mozzies in 30 degrees all week.....

The BL6 so far is great...when I go in mid morn roll up the doors and windows with mozzie nets down it is quite warm but it has been closed up for the night....however once the 2 doors with the mozzie nets are open and the 2 windows it soon cools down....Even when it is really warm in there( before everything is opened up) it is still bearable. The other clever thing is the bedroom pods can be open completely with a mozzie net door so if it is warm at night you can have just have the mozzie net done up and therefore good air flow..whereas in the Avantgarde there was just a mozzie net window at the top of the inner tent...

hope this is helpful

hi have just been in at 9.30 this am to check out tent...everything was shut all night just ventilation open....It was warm in there but def not baking hot....

We pitched our Cabanon this week in order to take pictures for Ebay... couldn't believe how cool it was inside, especially as soon as we hooked in the roof lining. Next day (same temperature) we pitched the Nevada M... its really hot in there - to the point we are panicking its maybe not the right tent for taking to France and Italy after all...
