Hi all, we're off on our first family camping outing this weekend and as it's supposed to p^ss it down on Friday, I'm keen to be as prepared as possible regarding pitching it.

The pitching instructions clear say to peg the four corners first.  However when I had a practice with the old man recently, he suggested you should start at one end and then stretch out and peg each section as you go, i.e. until you reach the other end.

Any thoughts on this? I'm sure tunnel tents are similar in terms of the best technique of pitching and I'd appreciate any guidance anyone can offer.

Cheers Pete

I have big tunnel tents and I have always found its much easier NOt to peg the corners down first .

I think its easier to get the pins in the poles with the tent not being pegged as there is no stress on the poles with the material not being stretched .

Its also easier to put pins into poles with poles lying on the ground rather than upright as you are not lifting the weight of fabric at the same time.

Make sure the door is open to let air into the tent or it creates a vacuum effect and almost inpossible to lift the tent otherwise.

I start at the back, put pins in poles and lie each pole on top of each other on the ground .

then peg out back corners , lift all poles up together ,one person each side walk it all forwards. Guy the front pole out so the whole tent is standing .Close the doors .
then peg down front corners .
Check its all as tight and straight as you can get it , then peg rings down , guylines out and all the other pegging points .

thanks to both of you for your responses - much appreciated.

I wasn't aware you could put the pins into the poles whilst they're lying on the ground - when we had our practice run in the garden, I'm pretty sure we had to really flex the pole to get some of them in.

This could be 'user error' though so I'll give it a go the way you've described.

thanks again

Pete
