Last year we spent our first year of camping in our new Icarus 500 without a canopy but would not be without one now.
It gives you a great outdoor living space. We cook in there and leave our cooker and cadac out there the whole time. We also leave our table and chairs there too.
Wind is not a problem as the poles each have a ring and pin plus a guy rope. There are also guys at the front. It clips onto the tent. It's very secure. Whenever we can, pitch allowing, we align the tent so it is facing down wind anyway.
When it rains it will obviously come in if it is diagonally coming towards the front but on our 4 times of using it, it has never been the case.
It means you can get in and out of the tent and not let any wet in which we found was a big problem last year.
I'd recommend one.
