We're a family fairly new to camping but my sister-in-law is now thinking of taking the plunge and buying a tent so they can come with us. Problem is, there are 6 of them (2 adults, 4 children) so they need a fairly big tent. They've found one that they like and is affordable for them and it measures approximately 3m by 7m. Just wondered if those of you with large tents and more camping experience can advise if wanting to pitch a large tent causes problems with some sites or are most sites generally accommodating for larger tents?

Do many sites have set pitches which don't allow for larger tents?

Hi

The maximum unit size allowed on a standard C7C Club pitch is 9m x 5m excluding the guy ropes.

A lot of other sites have similar rules, but a tent with a footprint of 7m x 3m should be fine

Sometimes if your tent is too big then the site might insist you pay for 2 pitches. The C&C Club have Jumbo pitches for extra large tents which they charge extra for.

We have an Outwell Hartford XL for 2 Adults and 2 children which has a footprint something like 7 x 7M (or just over). Only since we bought it have we had to take note of site policies on sizes.

We have found quite a few sites that have a 6 x 6M standard limit for tents.

How they handle going beyond that varies from wanting to charge for two pitches or having an additional fee for "large tents".

In general though, i have no regrets in enjoying the extra space and freedom and the tent is easier to pitch than my old and smaller "ProAction" one and I see lots of Big tents these days anyway.

I would think the size you suggested will not cause many problems except perhaps at the most stringent of sites.

Our tent is 7 by 5.4. I just make sure I find out before I book whether this is acceptable and whether they're going to charge me extra (in which case I would like for a different site!)

Jo

Thanks for the replies guys,

We've only stayed on one site that had set pitches anyway, the other all being a big field and being told to go and pitch where you like so tent size not an issue but we've only been on relatively few sites so thought i'd post to get some idea from more experienced campers!! Thanks once again!

Just got to convince her hubby that camping is a good idea now and they'll be sorted!!
