Hi I am new to this as just brought our first tent in many years, just the 2 of us and the dog, and have purchased the Kalahari 10 as I like the space, but a little concerned now as when looking to booking a site alot won't take a tent that size, my daughter brought the same but she has 3 children and a dog so need the space....Why are the larger tents not welcome at the campsites, seems unfair to me or is it just a money making thing...I have yet to come across a site that does not charge you more or not accept a tent this size at all....looking for something either near the New Forest or down Chichester way, any suggestions would be appreciated...Also have we been idiots to buy such a large tent, do we exchange before we attempt to put it up it has such a great report thats why we went for it...help

Although the space would be fab while you are camping, have you got somewhere to dry this very large piece of wet fabric should you have to take it down in the rain?

We only had a five berth tunnel tent last year and it was a bit of a nightmare trying to dry it. Tents always seem twice as big when you have them in your house trying to get them dry! Just a thought.

I finally got it all together, then forgot where I put it ;)

We've been to quite a few forestry comission camp sites in the New Forest, and our friends who come with us have a Kalahari 10 (with the porch as well) and they have yet to be charged any extra.  If you google Forest Holidays you'll find their website.

Anyway i like big tents too so your not alone..........

We're just getting back into camping after a 7 year absence because we started a family (and now after three have stopped!). Youngest is 2 (will be 3 by the time we go next year) so we're ready to go under the canvas again.

Been looking around quite a lot recently at different sites, then bought the Kalahari 10 on Monday.

I think camp sites have gone on from charging just a set rate per pitch, to charging for a pitch + 2 adults + car, then adding a charge per child.

When you think about it, it's probably fair, in that couples/singles pay for the pitch and would likely have a smaller tent than a family of five. So it helps to keep the cost of the pitch down, and larger groups pay a bit extra for the rest of their brood.

I was annoyed at first with the charging for kids, but having thought about it I think it's quite fair.

A double pitch charge for a Kalahari 10 seems harsh though - it's big but not massive.

I've come across quite a few sites through the search on here that allow roughly 8x6m so there are plenty out there. I'd imagine those charging more are probably sites with less room. So if you try and go for slightly bigger sites with more pitches they are less likely to charge extra for larger tents.
