Hi russelle, I wouldn't get too hung up on the HH number.
I don't know the 8 berth tents that well but it'll help those that do if you give some more info:
budget?
number of adults/children/bedrooms?
bedrooms at one end?
ease of pitching?
big living room required?
head height throughout?
integrated canopy/add-on extension?
any transport restrictions?
and many more ...
I had a feeling that HH ratings might be marketing gimmicks!
We have been given a 4 man Messeger tent by the in-laws but it's no where near big enough so been looking for something bigger with standing room.
Budget - £300ish
2 adults, 2 small kids but possibly another couple of adults
Not sure about the number of bedrooms, at the moment the kids are 5 1/2 & 18 months so need to keep an eye on them!
It will be mainly pitched by me alone but not worried if it's a bit of a struggle.
Needs a big living room!
Needs to accomodate a 6'2 adult standing especially in the bedroom.
We have a tigris 800 but also have the side canopy. For us the side canopy makes life a lot easier if the weather is wet.We are able to get a table set on one side and the cooking stand and table on the other with plenty of room through the middle. The front of the canopy also zips up meaning your nice and dry.
If we had to move everything inside the main tent i wouldnt feel too happy about that.Cooking inside would definately be a no no.
If budget is an issue the high gear kalahari 10 or 8 is exceptional value for £200 at go outdoors and a heck of a lot of tent for space inside. We saw one pitched next to us earlier this year and its got the space you require for sure.

My sister got this Easycamp Topeka 800 about 2 weeks ago, I was mostly struck by how massive the living area is, and I also liked that it has a 'master bedroom' with it's own exit.
The HH isn't really a marketing gimmick, it's there as a guide to the minimum 'waterproofness' that you'd want to accept. A 2000 HH is about the least you'd want, and if a tent said 1500 HH (like Halfords tents) you wouldn't want to touch them with a barge pole. It rains too much in this country to accept less than the minimum standard.
I have a quechua with a 5000HH and a Vango with the 2000HH and you can really feel the difference.
Very easy to pitch - only 5 poles Genuine 8 berth - can accommodate 8 x 75cm wide airbeds SIG (sewn in groundsheet - keeps bugs/draughts out and toddlers in!) Standing height throughout (225cm) Cable entry point Groundsheet goes flat at the doors so no trip hazzard Large windows Good ventialtion 5000HH rating Spacious living area (3.7m x 3.2m) Fits on standard pitch (7.5m x 3.7m) 3 bedrooms - 2 x 2 berth and 1 x 4 berth which can be divided Costs around £220
You can buy carpet and sun canopy to turn it into a real home from home.
russelle: a thought ... if it's not set in stone maybe consider a 6 berth. You can save yourself a bit of cash, or even spend the same money and bump the quality of the tent up a bit at the expense of a couple of extra bed spaces that in the final analysis you may not need.
As I remember, there have been a few posts on here of people with bigger tents not being able to book on to some sites - hopefully this won't become a more widespread practice, but you never know. You can see the attraction for some site owners in the busier areas to go down this route: just impose the rule, lose some customers but most unaffected by rule, and increase peak season capacity by say 20% at very little extra cost. Very annoying though.
Whatever you end up going for I'm sure you'll love it. Good luck
Have you looked at a Gelert Tahoma 9? We`ve had one for a couple of years - only £200 and its been to northern spain for 2 weeks plus numerous weekend in wales and the lakes. Its never leaked and has a good living area inside for rainy nights. Takes about 40mins and 2 people to put up.
Worth a look.

gelert horizon 8 or sunncamp shadow 800 get my vote. looked at all in depth and these two seem the best value. Probably the gelert is the better. HH not important? this tells you how effective the tent is against the rain. My understanding is that 1500HH is the standard for a british summer but the higher the rating the less likely to leak if you encounter bad weather. If it wasn't important it wouldn't make it into the marketing bumf also the review sites mention this as a plus if it has a high number. If I had two tents to chose from and the only real defference was that one had a HH of 2000mm and the other had 3000mm i would plump for the latter.
