We have just survived the kind of wind and rain that the met office classes as needing a special warning. Our tent (Vango Amazon 600) stood up to it very well BUT the noise was horrible as everything flapped and rippled. After 2 nights of that (and no sleep) I was worn out!

Any recommendations for a tent (specific or generic) that can stand up to strong winds and heavy rain but be quiet while it does it?

Fabric tent .... or .... Tin tent .... you'll get rain noise with the lightest of showers!

Goes with the territory I'm afraid!

I wouldn't dream of going out in anything over 30mph. No not soft just not worth the no sleep/possible damage. Wind doesnt usually last more then a day or 2 so go at a later date.

Canvas Dutch Pyramid - also known as Storm Tents (our 4 berth Pyramid is heavy Canvas and cost less than £150 delivered from Holland)

We survived some dreadful "summer" weather this year (including the night in July when many Welsh campsites were abandoned), proper Canvas is nice and quiet but nearby plastic tents and especially trees made a racket . . .

failing that, foam earplugs and a VERY large Vodka

We own a De Waard which is bombproof unless you are unlucky and a storm is blowing towards the door end (pyramids should be pitched with back into the wind!) in which case I'd be a little more concerned!

If I wanted to be 100% sure that my tent wouldn't be blown down or damaged by the wind i'd agree with ybyatt and buy a Karsten!

Canvas is a lot quieter than polyester, and until I tried it for myself this year I would not have believed the difference in a storm

Bell tents and canvas lavvu/tipis are fantastic in the wind. The structural strength is in the canvas. Ours don't budge at all, and all you hear is the gentle wafting of canvas.
