As more'n'more campers are turning to canvas, ...

Hi Jean, I think more and more people on this mb are turning to canvas but I'm not sure about campers more generally. Although belltents do seem to be in vogue with festival goers etc but they are a bit niche.

Anyway, my experience was that when I wanted to start camping, I went to a camping shop and they sold me one of the tents they wanted to sell that year. It was the latest nylon model so I assumed it was the pinnacle of tent design! All around me on campsites I saw other more-or-less similar tents so had no reason to doubt that modern dome or tunnel tents were the best.

It was only by coming on here and listening to the voices of more experienced campers that I learned of the Canvas Way and eventually was persuaded enough to try. And there is no way back

We love "retro camping" with our Athena and Relum Canaria. I can realistically pitch the Relum and all the kit on my own in less than an hour from start to finish. Whenever we use it we always get curious campers coming over to ask how old it is and when they realise the old girl has been going strong for a quarter of a century and looks good enough to go on for another they are truly amazed. We also use "period" accessories where possible too. Apart from the double height king size aerobed which is a must for Mrs Bert and easily fits in the bedroom pod. I have never slept in a Polyester tent so I can't really act as a judge all I know is I am very happy with my "old fahioned" tents.

Cheers

Bert.

I'm slowly coming round to the idea of an old canvas lovely! There was a beautiful orange and brown number on the field with us and the size looked perfect. I don't like being obviously nosey and couldn't get close enough to see a label (it was there on the lower right front). I've said to my friend and my husband about wanting one and their reply "why on earth would you want an old fashioned thing when you can have your pick of nice new ones"....*sigh* they don't understand!

We had a frame tent and sold it to 'upgrade' to a folding camper. I loved the frame tent but as it was a 6 berth (and there were 6 of us!) hubby and I only had a 2 berth inner tent. Our airbed completely filled the inner and I found it very difficult (I have osteoarthritis)climbing over it for night time porta potti visits...lol!

Other than that I loved the cosy, protected feeling of the canvas. During one holiday to the South coast we got caught in one of the worst storms I have ever camped through. On our site frame tents were the only ones still standing and undamaged.

That said we are about to purchase a polyester tunnel tent. Maybe we will regret this decision, but only time and a few camping trips will tell.

I'm camping in my cabanon at moment, I usually get a few funny looks when people see me pitch my ' old fashioned tent' but they seem surprised at how quick it goes up ! Only seem a couple of frame tents on this site today but they do stand out and look very smart among the sea of tunnels and domes !

We've left frame tents and pyramids behind. Fed up with their packed bulk, weight, fussy fabrics, curtains etc, lack of SIG, lack of head room (in the pyramids)... etc. We've had both canvas and polyester in the past and have decided to choose polyester in future.

The temperature issue is less of an issue for us as we don't hang around during the day and we have good ventilation anyway - more key for us is the better space to bulk ratio for transit, cleaner design, SIG, flymesh, simpler maintenance, etc. even if we have to replace the tent more often. Works out very little cost per year... We do stick with wind-shedding designs and stronger pole and fabric combinations though!

Helen
