Has anyone done touring with the Djakarta? I posted yesterday saying that I hope to do a 3 month tour of France next year from June to Sept. The Djakarta is my first choice (the other was a Quechua 2 Seconds XXL IIII).   My main concern is that at weighing in at 16kg, will I end up in tears if if I have to keep packing and unpacking the Djakarta, possibly every 3-4 days, particularly if it rains a lot and the tent gets muddy and very heavy.   

Since lots of solo ladies own the tent, I'm assuming that it's not a problem getting the centre pole up, and the remainder of the pitching is straight forward. If the ground is quite hard, is it difficult to peg the tent?

Any thoughts gratefully accepted!!

Hi Irisgirl,

It is very easy to get the centre pole up, in fact the whole pitching experience is quick and enjoyable.

I have never had any problems with pegging, I use the bigger pegs on the guys (sometimes deltas if it's really windy) and carry a rubber mallet. I do tend to have an assortment of rock pegs etc in my peg bag too

I wouldn't want to de camp every day, but every 3 or 4 days would be fine, especially if I had a car to load things into.

I don't have a car, so have to roll and pack the tent up properly every time I move, so I can stack it on the trolley I use.

You could get a rubble bag from a builders yard and just loosely fold it, pop it in your car, and then re pitch at your new destination. That would cut down on time and effort.

The actual pitching takes me about 10 mins, then I spend about another 20 mins faffing with my pegs and putting beds etc inside.

I agree with moonmummy. It's an easy tent to erect. Not especially fast, because of all the pegging, but it's all easy work. (I'm not as fast as moonmummy - it takes me pretty much an hour from arriving to sitting down with a drink!)

Hey,

The Djakarta is a very easy tent to errect. I would prefer a cotton tent instead of a sweaty 2 seconds polyester tent.

Steel poles are also better than Glasfiber poles.

Thanks for giving me more food for thought. I've bought most of the gear for camping, but the tent needs to tick as many boxes as possible.

A recent trip with a friends Quechua (nice tent) was helpful. Although very roomy it was less than 100cm in height - and my temperamental back rebelled! So decided that I definitely need a tent closer to my 1.6m height.

One more question. Do you order the Djakarta through Obelink or from www.tent-tents.com?   When I click on the UK icon at top of Obelink screen it sends you to tent-tents.com.

Obelink and tent.tents are the same. I ordered my Eldorado and Cotton Canopy from them and both times they were excellent. Could not fault them in any way. The Eldorado was out of stock but theyn kept me informed throughout. I know Savanne had a bad experience with them as her tent arrived damaged but it does seem on here that most people who bought from them have had nothing but praise for their service. HTH.

we have the Edloradom which is a little bigger/heavier but agree with what everyone else is saying

Obelink were very good, delivery quick and painless

if you are pitching and moving regularly I think a footprint plastic sheet or similar might be useful to keep things as clean as possible

as to pegs, we have fat rock pegs for the guys and skinny rock pegs for the walls if it rocky
skinny rock peg These are good because they are very easy to get in/out in ground where wire pegs are a problem
fat rock pegs These are very strong in most ground as they are pretty thick

Hello again

Getting much closer to buying a tent (I think)!! Looking at the Obelink site, the Djakarta is packed in two separate bags which are both 110cm long.   My small problem is that although my Honda boot is large for a small car, it only measures 95cm to 110 cm in width.

Can the tent be repacked in 3 bags instead of 2, so that it can be refolded so it will fit in the boot? I don't fancy transporting a wet tent on the back seat after I've been camping.

The only other tent that I like is the Cabanon Noumea. Does anyone know the size of the bag that is packed in? Would definitely have to separate it into 2 bags to cope with the weight. The only negative point is that I would have to save up my pennies for a few months to afford it. But the sewn in groundsheet is very tempting!!

You can repack any pyramid to make a shorter pack size but obviously that will make it a little fatter.

You can also put the inner(s) in a seperate bag to make the largest one a little smaller/lighter too.
