Hi all,

I was looking at buying an Outwell Montana 6 berth tent but am being side tracked by tents that pop up online that look very similar and are much cheaper. For instance the Nordiktackle 43kg tent looks remarkably familiar! There seems to be other Scandanavian 'sounding' companys also selling these types of tent. Can anyone advise as to whether these are good quality tents or cheap copys?

Thanks in advance,

Mat

If you like the Monty, look at Vango's version of it - Vango Columbia 600, very similar design and spec, 5000HH, with the option of 2 or 3 bedrooms, plus full or part opening front. It is discontinued this year but the 2010 Sungari 600's footprint, carpet and canopy (in sage) will fit it. Also has Vango's TBSII internal strapping system that gives even more stability when clipped in place in very windy weather.

Still a few around at £280 (RRP 2009 was £450) - one person on the tent review page got one for much less.

Best thing to do if possible is go and view them, you can tell far more from a viewing than any spiel from the companies.

Plus look online after for the best deal expecially if after a footprint/carpet/awning as well.

In no way am i prejudice to the fact that i have a Monty.

The good thing about a Monty is you will easily get hold of extras.

If you buy anything discontinued, try and get everything you need for it at the same time (canpoies, carpets etc.) as availability may be poor afterwards.

I say go for the Filey..... reasons are that the monty needs an extra porch to be bought  at vast expense to use the front door when raining. Add to this the 100d material and its miles better. Outwell was the brand to have a few years ago but you will see more and more problems with quality.

Thanks for all the advice but has anyone had any experience of the Nordiktackle tents? They only seem to be available on line so it's difficult to get to see one. The 43kg one seems to look just like the Outwell Montana 6 but less than £300!

Trouble is that they might look the same and even have what seems to be a similar spec, but when you see them in the flesh there can be major differences in the quality of the materials, poles, groundsheets etc, that would explain the price difference and why they are not in the shops.... Unfortunately, you can't go by spec and design alone.

The Kampa Filey for example has a 100 denier flysheet that naturally has double if not more resistance to UV degradation and greater tear strength than other polyester tents, including Outwells (75 denier); doubling or more the life of the tent. The Vango Columbia has a similar spec to the Outwell with an extra bedroom and full/part opening front, albeit without some of the fancy detail of the Montana. Khyam have also done a similar design with canopy, but the flysheet is 72 denier on this one, albeit well thought of.

A few weeks back I was looking for a new tent in the six person category. I read the reviews on the Khyam Harewood, Montana 6 and a couple of Kampa's and fine tents they all are.  I then came across Speedcamp's comments on the Vango Columbia, and found that it ticked every box as far as I was concerned.  In my opinion this tent is a match with it's rivals in any area, except maybe the double the life aspect of the 100D v 75D. Having said that you can almost get two Vango's for the price of some of the others and you could always spend £30 on some solar proofing. At the end of the day only you know what you want from a tent so research well using as many sources as possible.

Glad you like it...

I think the reason why there are still a few Columbia's available to buy is because many retailers have been using pre-production images of the tent with fibreglass poles not the steel poles it comes with! But at least those of us who do our homework can benefit...
