Well Sunday took its toll on many tents on the site we were staying at. I counted around 8 tents totally destroyed, and some completely vanished. The poor family at the side of us had an Halfords tent and a small non-descript 2 person tent. They went off for the day and despite me re-pegging their tent a few times they returned to find the Halfords tent was destroyed, and the small tent had blown away!

Other tents that were destroyed were an High Gear Mojave 5, a Coleman event shelter, a Outwell Hartford L (due to not being correctly guyed down) an Outwell Vermont which ripped the guy lines out and was on the verge of blowing away, but a few of us managed to save it as the owners were out., two Halfords tents and a a Gelert pop up tent.

Some people only have them selves to blame though. It was obviously windy from early in the day, but so many people left the site with only half, if not less, of the guy ropes pegged down. The Outwell Hartford L only had the ground sheet pegged, with one or two guy ropes, and it got wrecked.

There were also people actually trying to erect flimsy looking gazebos in the strong winds. Common sense did seem to be very lacking on this site.

Moral of the storey? Always always fully peg down, especially if your're going off for the day. Invest in some delta pegs. £10 buys you 10 delta pegs on e-bay which is adequate for even a large tent.

Hi

We are new to camping and have a Skandika tent which is quite high on the day you mention we had a problem with our tent where the top folded own into the middle,

my question is, do you tighten the guy ropes or slacken them slightly to allow the tent to ride with the wind.

would appreciate any advice

Guy lines should allow the tent to flex if it is fibre poled

We were in Northumberland on 'Wind Test Sunday' - windy up there at the best of times but Sunday was pretty spectacular.

The lack of common sense was quite frightening - one dome tent had NONE of the guys pegged out and the owners went out for the day. It didn't stay put for long. Neither did the Higear tunnel tent which was emptied as the owners were going home. Unfortunately for them, they disappeared for a short while, leaving the empty tent with the front door rolled up and just wire pegs to hold it in place! Took a few volunteers to keep it on the ground!

I enjoyed the experience but probably only because we escaped with just a split pole. Definitely learned a lot that weekend though!

it was a nightmare! we'd borrowed our friends tent to go racing in as we'd rented our static out just up the road from the site, we chickened out of staying in the tent just for that night and lent our friends empty static (didnt want to take the chance of it collapsing in on us with a small baby)

Great Video Bob.
It's amazing how many people do not peg all the guylines. The bloke next door to me, blamed his tent being a Bad design, rather than the fact that He had only had 2 pegged out lines or had no pegs in the ring and Pin system.

I did give him some friendly advice.

It never fails to amaze and amuse me how some people erect their tents. If you walk round a campsite you will see wire pegs stuck upright in the ground and sticking out by about 2" with guy ropes just hooked over the ends. You will see tunnel tents which haven't been stretched out enough and sag between each pole...I expect the occupants complain there isn't as much headroom as they expected...and lots of other problems.

The trouble is that if nobody tells them then they will continue doing things wrongly...and if you try to tell them they think you are an interfering busybody. Maybe they will learn when they lose a few expensive tents and can no longer blame the manufacturer.

Ive said many a time on these forums. You can never have enough pegs. If theres a guy line or loop stick a peg in it or 2. I think we put 67 pegs in the ground last time we used the corado and that was in the summer. But at least we felt confident it would still be there when we got back after a day out.

I wondered why so many people were camping in December, as that was unusual, then noticed the date of the first post. Lol

You notice it on every campsite, when people haven't bothered or don't realise how to properly guy out a tent. We had to pitch next to an Outwell Vermont this year, in France, and not a single side guy rope was pegged out, they were all pristine and factory-fresh.

It's not just about un-pegged tents being trashed though, it always worries me that flying tent debris could tear through ours as well. I don't suppose anyone's going to be in a hurry to fork out for damage done to adjacent property, do you?
