Anyone have any experience with roof top tents for car roofs?  ARB in Austraia make a good one called the Simpson III I gather from online reviews, has anyone in the UK used one?  This is for an FJ Cruiser 4X4 for the mountains and bush application in the N. America environment possibly even in winter....what do you think?

Hi and welcome to UCKS.

Tbh I don't think there is much demand for that kind of tent in the UK,saying that someone might have one.

Wouldn't fancy wanting to get up in the night for a pee.lol

Thanks.  They are specialized equipment no doubt, but keep you off the cold ground, away from snakes and bears and such, things you don't encounter in the UK granted.

These are more specialized as they are for expedition type people, doing overland expeditions, and can even be mounted on top of small off-road trailers, the kind you tow behind a 4X4 like a FJ Cruiser.  See overlandjournal.com and you will see lots of refs to ARB, EEZI AWN and GORDIGEAR roof tents.

Accordong to wikipedia they are popular in Europe, there are some Italian companies making them, but the ones I see on YouTube from Maggolina or whatever look kind of lame compared to the top-dollar ARB Simpson III tent from Australia.

This is ARB kit, but gets kind of pricey by the time they import it.

Anyone got any experience in this area?  Thnx

I've not been in one myself but there was one parked near us at a campsite in France last year.  They looked great fun, probably really comfortable and cosy inside but like someone else said, getting up in the night and clambering down the ladder for the loo might be a bit difficult

Must be pretty easy to pitch (or whatever you actually do to it...) ...?

Howling Moon ones I've read good stuff about, but they're expensive. Mate of mine, who I have seen for ages, has one on a Land Rover trailer. Read good stuff about Prime Tech ones as well (think they might be Camping Lab or something in the US). Half the price of Howling Moon, quicker to set up....and from reviews they are much better value. Would like to get one at some point to either go on my Mitsubishi or on my trailer.

Suppose with a bucket there'd be no need to climb in and out during the night. Or even a Shewee for the wife.....could just direct it out the door!

I might have to get a roof tent, for when the wife chucks me out for buying too many tents. She'd be quite happy for me to sleep above the Mitsi in the drive (can't sleep in it...too much work gear).

I've been looking at various ways of kipping at far away classic car/bike events and have looked into 2-berth caravans (Eriba Puck), 2-berth trailer tents (Cabanon Venus, etc) and now these roof tents. There's one made for the Mini which resembles a GRP suitcase where the top half raises up. The expedition-type roof tents look good quality but as has been said, are expensive. It's a shame they are not more popular as I'd be interested.
