Okay, so, decision time. Have read just about every comment about canvas tents and remain even more confused with all the information. Being a Gemini and a lady of a certain age I’m allowed to be indecisive. Until my body gives up the ghost this tent is going to be my main on my travels.
I can work around my small car boot, and I have finally (I think) narrowed my choice to:
Hypercamp Djakarta/ Eldorado
Cabanon Noumea
Hypercamps
Had always focused on the Djakarta which is a smashing tent looking at all your pictures. But I now ask myself is there any extra benefit in buying the Eldorado over the Djakarta apart from it being cheaper and is 30cm wider? I suppose my main concern is whether the slightly extra space is worth the extra weight (6.6kg).
Cabanon Noumea
I know that Merry and Snowbirdcr have this tent. Looks the bees knees apart from the price tag. Since the tent is smaller than the Djakarta, is it more suitable for a long weekend or would I be just as comfortable in it for a whole week - I'm a minimalist when it comes to all the mod-dons. The SIG is tempting but with this extra weight, does it make it more difficult to pitch than the Hypercamps? Being a very independent lady, I want to be self-reliant when erecting my tent!
Will also invest in a tarp no matter which tent I opt for.
Thanks again for any input as someone has to save my sanity

Well having just brought our first Cabanon after wanting one for 2 years. I know what one I would pick, but that is purely on not even having camped in one yet and still waiting to get it delivered, so I am no help at all really!
I think pitching with a sig is easier than without as it keeps it shape when you are pegging (got a barbados, a big noumea!)
Very quick and easy to pitch for 1 person, don't worry about it
In the long term I don't know if the cabanon will be any better than the hypercamps, I can only vouch for the cabanon as I haven't seen either of obelink tents in the 'flesh'
Might be worth putting the rosas into the argument as well?
If I could have afforded it, I would have gone for the Rosas, as I was really wanting a SIG. I would expect it to be easier to pitch, not that the Djakarta is remotely hard.

we have got Cabanon frametent and Eldorado pyramid - I would say Cabanon Canvas and stitching is marginally higher quality but the Hypercamp was way cheaper so its a tough call quality wise unless budget does not matter
I suspect (but dont know) the Djakarta and Eldorado weights are closer than Obelink admit, I know someone weighed their Djakrarta and found it a lot heavier than 16kg. Certainly fabric amounts alone dont add up to 6kg difference
we picked Eldorado over Djakarta for the space, shape and cost - the rear of the sleeping pod is square so more useable and the whole tent was cheaper
If we had the money, and I had seen how nice Hypercamp where I would go Rosas next time around
good luck with your choice - no wrong answers here, just choice and consequence
Iris, we have the Eldorado and have to say it is a very good quality tent, amazingly so for the price.
I would say get one now before the price goes up. As 'Eldorado' says, it may not be quite up to the very high standard of Cabanon, but it's pretty close and certainly won't let you down in adverse weather.
Of course if you want a sig it's not for you but with a footprint groundsheet, supplied groundsheet and a couple of picnic rugs it's more than cosy enough for us.
I have just put a picture of it up on the tent review page, the tarp came in handy when it poured last Sunday.
I spent ages trying to decide between the Eldorado and the Djakarta. and eventually opted for the Djakarta as it was lighter. Though now I've got it I agree with comment that both tents are probably closer in weight than the site suggests the Djakarta seems quite heavy to me.
I was worried it would be too small especially the living area but its fine and the living area is quite roomy enough for a small table and couple of chairs and bits and bobs in the sides. The only thing I found was when I went away I used the mattress from my trailer tent which is just over 2m in lenghth and I had to sleep side to side not front to back if that makes sense. I haven't tried it with smaller sleeping mats.
I think you would be fine with either tent the quality seems really good especially for the price. The only other thing that put me of the Eldorado was the number of tent pegs it seems to have alot more than the Djakarta.
Its really easy to put up I can do it by myself no problems and if I can do it anyone can.( i'm also a lady of a certain age) I didn't look at Rosa as I'm not a fan of SIG. The Djakarta was fine with the big mudflaps and ground sheet and with a couple of picnic blankets it was really warm in the living area no drafts.

I brought the Rosas this year and it is a lovely tent, I also have a Cabanon Montpelier, so can compare. Personally I think they could have come out of the same factory there is hardly any thing to distinguish the quality.
I was very pleasantly surprised when the Rosas arrived I did not expect the quality to be so high. Zips are very heavy duty. The ZIG (not SIG) is very thick and makes my Outwell Montana look like a kids play tent.
I can pitch in about 15mins start to finish, it is so easy as Val says because you just put a peg in each corner put the front poles in, pull the front upright and peg the 2 front guys. push your way inside with centre pole, then fully peg. So simple.
It is a lot of work the first pitch so try to do that at home as the canvas is stuck together and all the guys need to be tied. And of course the ZIG needs zipping on, dont do what I did and get the tent up then try to do it! Unfold it first peg it out then zip the tent to it
Packing away I just drop the inner and fold it all as one with zig attached. Goes in the very oversized bag easily.

I had a quick peak at the ESVO site and under the FAQ's section was the question:
How long can I carry my cotton tent in a wet condition ?
Answer: maximum 24 hours then drying very thoroughly. We advise to give vent to the tent within 12 hours. Otherwise the cloth could decay/stifle as it does not get enough air.
Do you have to be that careful when looking after cotton tents?
Also, if you have to pack up the tent if it has been raining, does it become so heavy that it offers a real challenge to get it back in the boot for a titchy person like me?
Looked at the ESVO Dakota (about £315+free delivery) Seems about same size as the Eldorado, weight 19.5kg - also looks super!!
On the other hand, still tempted by the Noumea with its SIG but not sure that it would be big enough. The ESVO Kansas does have a SIG but the inner seems to be in the form of a roll up curtain which makes the tent less in weight than the Dakota.
I have a noumea and a guadaloupe (same tent, just bigger) if I was alone I would be more than comfy in the noumea, my 16 year old daughter uses it with her friend and has been putting it up alone since we bought it three years ago. Great quality. I have no experience of the other one. As far as wetness goes, I have never packed up sopping wet, only damp which soon dries out at home.
I had to pack up my Djakarta sopping wet, rivers of water ran off it when I got it out again
I just bundled it into a black bin bag and chucked it on the back seat, and I did only leave it about 24 hours before getting it pitched again to dry it out. Because it was so very very wet I couldn't have opened it out to dry indoors, but previous merely damp occasions have successfully been dealt with by draping the canvas round my bedroom for a couple of days, with regular turning.
Does it need more looking after? Well I wouldn't leave a poly tent damp in the bag for long either. But I am going to give my canvas more care because it cost me a lot more!
