I use a loop created by figure 8 (overhand is ok too but not quite so strong, climbers habit) the guy line can then be looped through the canvas loop (larks head style) - so removal is easy if you ever need to
do same on my Tarp now too - very strong, quick and easy to tie, quick and easy to change
I like raf48's suggestion of 'S' hooks. I must try that!
I'd also suggest adapting the so-called 'lorry drivers' hitch' (but I can't find an online 'how to' illustrating tying one).
Here is an illustration of some common knots. Search Google and you'll find tons more, I'm sure.
An alternative approach - some swear by it, some swear at it - is to have the runner end looped through the grommet or ferrule at the tent end and tie off the loose end on the peg using a quick-release knot.

I use S hooks tied to the guy lines, so I can remove all the guys quickly if they are wet when I break camp.
I was thinking of doing the same thing, do you use normal kitchen type stainless steel S hooks?

The overhand loop is stronger than the EDK (European Death Knot figure 8 loop). That's what I was told at on mountain course, anyway.
Slip knot over the peg, line through the loop and a taut line hitch works really well. Or bowline to secure guy to tent, then line around tent peg with taut line hitch. Works just as well as guy sliders, in fact much better than the crappy sliders.
I use plated steel ones, from my local cheap shop. I think they cost less than £4 for about thirty. It was two packets. If they do start to rust, I will replace them.
ebay 10 off 25mm for 99p plus postage as an example
------------- Canvas tent, paraffin light, petrol stove. Heaven
I'd rather be kayaking.
Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.
Thanks everyone, I used wheetabixfaces's link for the BLOODY bowline it took me a few minutes to learn it while sitting in front of my laptop but do you think I could do it when connecting the guy's to the tent in the garden Tried to take the laptop with me to follow the animated guide but couldn't see the screen in the sunlight and the internet connection kept dropping out However my son seemed to making a much better job of it, so I left him to it I like the idea of the S hooks too, might change them over next season. Thanks everyone.
