Outwell have been made in China for at least 8 years and prob more. They may have switched factories for cost cutting reasons. Outwell started small with an excellent quality but as the years have gone on and more people wanted them their output has massive.
In most manufacturing you expect a 2 - 3 % returns so if you are only selling 1000 units you expect 20 units back but if you are doing 10000 plus then you expect 200 plus units back. Makes sense really and add to the fact that internet forums are more popular you will see why you are perhaps "seeing" more faults now.
The old saying about if you have a good service and product you will tell your friends and if a bad one you will tell everyone really does come true in this case.

Hi w25mat, sorry to hear of your all the tent faults etc but glad to hear your dealers were so helpful, good luck with the replacements.
We bought a new Trout Lake 4 (plus the extension, windscreen, chairs etc etc all matching) spent a fortune on our 'dream tent' (see my thread) listing ALL FAULTS, still trying to get a replacement, none left in the country?
Message posted on 18/9/2010 - Topic: Trout Lake 4 - Faults, advice please?
It takes a long time to build a good reputation but a short time to loose it.....
Have Outwell sacrificed quality for quantity ?
Anyone got a contact email address for Oase Outdoors, please?

Quite often, the people who shout the loudest about tents are those who have had a bad deal and I don't blame them, but all those who are satisfied usually sit back happy and say nothing. It pays to read proper reviews on particular models of tents rather than paying too much attention to the disappointed few then coming to a conclusion that all tents of a certain brand are rubbish

China now has a near monopoly on manufacturing just about everything. And we all voted for the clowns in Parliament, that have allowed this to happen. Get used to shoddy workmanship,it's here to stay. You used to get what you paid for. Not any more.

I don't think we should be taking this too far ...
Outwell make some superb tents - I've got one and it's fantastic. There is no problem at all with quality of materials or construction, and it's performed brilliantly in some pretty testing conditions. Loads of other members on here who've a lot of experience of tents have one and rate them very highly as well. I did a lot of research before buying my tent and it's lived up to all my expectations.
The problem, as I see it, is this: Outwell quality control has gone missing, and far too many duff tents are being sold to customers, leaving the customers themselves to do the quality inspections. To get my fantastic Outwell tent I first had to buy a duff one, find the fault, take it back and get a replacement. The whole process of buying it, pitching it, checking it, drying it, returning it, pitching it, checking it, drying it ... annoyingly it took me almost a week to get myself a tent bought. I'm very pleased I bought from a company that I could just drive over to without messing about with couriers otherwise it would have taken longer.
I'd be very happy to recommend buying an Outwell Lake tent, but advise at the same time, to buy from a shop with a good reputation, and as local as possible. And obviously to pitch and check it over after you've bought it - if you're not 100% happy with the finish then don't hesitate to return it. For belt and braces, try and do a test camp to test the tent properly as soon as possible. Any problem with that, then return it ... and then if/when you've got your replacement tent do the same all over again.
Overkill? Methinks not.
It all comes down to numbers at the end of the day. At 1 in 100 then you'd have to be pretty damn unlucky to get yourself a bad one, and all of this checking would not be worth advising so strongly. At 1 in 10 the tents need to come with a bit of a health warning.
So what are the numbers? We'll never know. All we can go on is anecdotal evidence, and at the moment it's not looking too good for the Danish Chinamen.

Curlygirl, here's the address for Outwell from UKCS Company Directory. I emailed and had several email correspondence with some helpful advice, although it does mean having to contact the retailer.
Best wishes Sam

I have an Outwell Phoenix which is still going strong despite hard use but is a bit awkward to pitch now I'm usually camping on my own. I borrowed my son's Jersey S but the downside of this was getting water in the sleeping compartment. After a lot of debate, went for the Fusion 200 each, since the Vision, which can be packed down into a smaller space, has the same issue as the Jersey S.
I'm wondering if I have a problem with my tent. My son's tent, after copious viewings and practice, behaves largely as per the video and written instructions. Furthermore, the side poles lie flat on the ground when pitched. My tent (it would have to be mine) stubbornly refuses to do anything of the kind (I've brought it home half packed more than once) without a major battle and when pitched, one of the side poles is flat, but the other lies under the tent. I am wondering if there is something wrong with the poles.
In case you're thinking I'm just a hopeless blonde, we've had sixteen people having a go, following instructions to the letter and including a very kind gentleman who did not laugh at my struggles - my friends by this time were consumed by hysterical laughter!! - who had the Fusion 300 and he couldn't get it to fold properly either.
Aside from this, I'm happy with quality and the porch is a Godsend. It's sad others have had issues and, having read comments on here, think I'd better ask the question.

I think Pat's comment on our last trip summed it up perfectly, " it would be nice to go home & know we are using the same tent next time".
We are on our 4th Monty 6 in 12 months, had a ground sheet that wicked water, a row of holes like it had been dragged across the floor then repaired with clear glue from new, a steel pole bent at the joint & ripped two guy points off, a hole the size of a cig burn with melted material around it.
We repaired the last one as we are totally pi$$ed off with changing them but fair play to GO for exchanging without a problem each time, as also noted we are cutting 1/2" off the porch support to reduce strain on the tent side & zip.
We have a 2005 Hartford M & love it, no faults & superb quality also have a 2007 Hartford XL which is well made but the material is getting brittle.

We have 2 outwells and never had any problems. However with any product there can always be a faulty unit so my simple advice is buy from a good local retailer who you trust and then if you are unlucky enough to have a problem it's easily rectified.
It also then means the local retailers get a chance to compete against the "big" retailers too.
Are there more quality issues or are peple just more vocal about them? Who knows.
