hi has anyone any tips on how to make a fly screen for the vango icarus 500 front door, just so that next year we could open the front door without wasps and flies etc getting in.

I bought a couple of mozzie nets from Lidl earlier this year and we used them in the campervan. They came with a roll of velcro, which we didn't use, but you could. Tricky stuff to handle though, needs 2 of you.

Not advocating a throw away society - but you could upgrade to the new 2011 version (see Norwich Camping website), which has mozzie net on both doors and a higher HH

Alternatively, you could try a bigger version of what I've done for our overnight tent - use a large flymesh (ours was for windows off ebay - but probably not big enough for you) and edge with sew-on binding tape. Get some "suspender ends", the type with hooks on - clip them to the mesh/edging and hook on to the zip of the front door (i.e. when door is open) and around the pegs/rubbers at the bottom. The advantage of the suspender ends is that you can adjust the position to get the flymesh to fall right. If you want the top more rigid either add more suspender ends to line up with the door ties along the top and hook to these or you could add a channel of material at the top and thread through a length of net curtain wire (the type with the hooks on the end). The mesh will also stick to the velcro pads down the side of the door if its the hook side of the pad...

Suspender Ends 1 Pair - White

Hope this helps...

Helen

Can someone post a pic of the suspender ends in use. I'm trying to imagine how they look in action.

I haven't got a picture. The suspender ends are pictured above. The bit you see on the right on the one closest to the camera fits on the flymesh. The fabric is trapped between the button bit and the plastic that clips over it (just like on a pair of ladies stockings). The hook on the left of the photograph then is hung through the hole on the zip puller or around a tie-back, inner tent suspension point or an elastic pegging point. Some makes are stronger than others. They also come in different sizes.

Thanks for that Helen, might modify for our Lulworth which doesn't have a mesh door on the front, though it does every where else!!

Yes, the car is bigger than the 'van.

Oh thanks for this, I was thinking of trying to do something with our Mojave because that doesn't have mesh on the big front door either and I hate having loads of bugs in the tent at night..... I never gave it a thought that there is already velcro down the sides of the doors, d'oh!!! Think I might need a lot of fly screens joined together but I'm sure I can find a way, again, probably strips of velcro to hold them together where necessary. Love the suspender idea too but think I need to see the tent up again to see how it would work on ours. I love this site! :-D

Kathryn

I'm glad you two are on the same wavelength as me :) I vaguely remember seeing suspenders or something in a pile of magazines that my mate had when we were 13....hmmmmm, will they keep the mozzies out? Certainly kept us awake.

Sorry, can't imagine fly screens without remembering our Jack Russell running full pelt into our tent the other week.

Unfortunately for him the fly screen was zipped up and he couldn't see it.

The image of him bouncing off it and flying backwards through the air still makes me chuckle.

.....as you were........

You can buy no see-um mesh on line and its not to expensive.

I have thought about buying this and then keeping it in place with magnets which means you dont have to sew or stick anything to the actual tent.

It would be easier if all the tent manufacturers  put mesh on all the doors
