I have been meaning to investigate my childhood tent for some time and had memories of a huge tent in brown and orange, with flowery curtains. I've just put it up and it's green! It's quite a faded green with a beige roof and an integrated short front canopy in dark green. The inside of the tent shows the original colour, a brighter lime green - but I was right on one thing, the curtains are flowery and it is they that are brown and orange.

It's called a Stan Evans standard 6. It has one J door and a window beside it on the front and then another window on the right side. On the left there is a kitchen annexe with orange plastic sides and a mesh window.

I think I'll start using this tent as it's such a waste to have it and keep it in my parents loft. It's quite large inside and I would imagine would be a lovely tent to use for a week or a fortnights holiday.

I wish I could post the pics but my camera got sand in it at the beach last week and although it's still taking pictures the storage card won't read on the computer. I'm gutted about that because I've been planning to post about this tent for some time.

Now for the bad news. It is supposed to have six guys attached to the edge of the roof all around. One has come off. It has quite a few rubbers missing and some feet too. But the worst thing of all is that at least 5 of the poles need straightening as the last time it was used it got quite a bit of damage in a storm. One of the side legs won't even meet the ground. Despite that when it's (mostly) pegged down it doesn't look too wonky! Maybe I should just use it as it is.

What do you think, is it worth fixing up?

I finally got my sand ridden memory card to co-operate for me. I hope someone here knows something about the manufacturer, the tent was bought new in 1974 when I was one.

Alot of the pegging points no longer have the rubber ring.

And finally....the funky curtains!

The Hessian bag which held the poles has disintegrated. Since the poles are colour coded yellow (back) red (middle) and blue (front) I quite like the idea of putting the coloured poles in separate bags to make it a bit easier to carry. Has anyone got a clue where long bags suitable for steel framed tent poles could be bought, or is it something I'll have to make.

those curtains look familiar......

The pole bags are easy to make from old flysheet material, or even easier, an old anorak, just cut off the sleeves!

Lyndon, it is a much loved tent that has served my family for many years and is going to be restored so that it can continue to be used. I can't believe that you've popped up with this information! My tent was bought in 1974 - how does that tie in?

It would be interesting to know a little more about the company. How long did your Grandad make the tents for?

And of course I want to know, do you have one of the tents, or did you have one when you were little.

Obviously the company had distribution if my parents were able to buy it in Northern Ireland. I love the pic of Evans house.

I'm sure I can't be the only one with a Stan Evans tent!

Stan Evans is actually my granddad, and ran the family business in Warrington, producing a whole range of tents, trailer tents and so on.

It's great to see that you are still finding use for the tents.

If I remember correctly Stan Evans's shop was on the top floor of a mill in Orford Lane Warrington and quite a trek upstairs.
