I've just planned my camping trip for this year, and we're heading to the black forest in Germany, which I've heard will not only be great for us, but also for the kids.
Although our old tent is getting a bit worn now, so I've been looking for a new one. Just wanted to get your opinion on a tent I've been looking at which is the Vango Icarus 600.
If anyone has this tent, or any other retrogradations I'd be really appreciative. If you do have any other ideas I'm after a 6 man tent so there is plenty of room for the 4 of us. I'm not that bothered about separate sleeping pods, although it would be an added bonus.
Thanks in advance.

I have the Icarus 500 and I'm very happy with it. It's very quick to put up, about 10 to 15 minutes. The optional porch is a great addition too.
The TBS system really works as I can attest to in a very strong gale in Somerset last year. The straps can be folded away in their little pocket which is sewn on to the side of the tent, or can be snapped into place using the clips. It's only necessary to use them if the wind gets up, but when you do use them the whole structure becomes even more stable.
The Vango Icarus tents are very popular on this forum with lots of happy owners - you get plenty of tent for the money, and the tension pole support system works very well in practice by all accounts.
The 'tent info' forum has several discussions going on at the moment which could be of interest to you.
Puddle jumper,We are quite new to camping,so wanted a large tent that was easy to erect. We ended up with a Gelert Horizon 6,and could not be happier with our choice. Easy to pitch,2 bedrooms that sleep 3 people (1 at each end).Porch extention as an optional extra for more room.Just another idea for you to check out,as you can get one for under £180 if you look around, which is great value for a good quality 6 man tent.Check out the tent review section for even more choices of tent.Take your time it will be worth it.

The mesh options for the Icarus 2010 model is that there is a mesh 'layer' on the inside of the side door which you can use or keep tied back. In the 2011 model the mesh is on the side and the front doors.
Having said that I went to France with a four man polyester tent with no mesh doors. Many french sites are well shaded but had we been in full sunshine we probably would have found the heat a bit stifling first thing in the morning We were up an about early because we wanted to not because we were put out of the tent - due to the shade.
As for the mesh, well we didn't miss it because we weren't indoors anyway. All our time was spent out and about or sitting in front of the tent enjoying the lovely weather. We cooked outside, we sat outside so mesh or no mesh - no big deal to us.
One thing I would say is keep your bedroom pod closed during the day. The first full day I was there I didn't close it properly and when I went to bed that night I inadvertantly closed myself in with some mosquitos. I looked like I had measles the next morning, luckily I didn't have any bad reaction like I do with midges in this country.
The 2011 model not only has flymesh on both external doors, it also has darkened inner tents so you don't get woken up so early and a higher level of waterproofing than the 2010 model. The door thresholds no longer fold down, but you can get a better seal at the bottom on drafty nights.
In hotter climates you could even just use the flymesh on the external doors at night to keep the ventilation flowing, which would be a particular advantage of the 2011 model. I actually think that the 2011 model is not badly priced given the extra features...

Yep, like you Victoria, we've camped with a polyester tent in France, and if you can get some shade for your tent it's fine heat-wise - you still need to get up and out quite early, but that's not a problem for most of us. I prefer to be outside of the tent rather than inside. Occasionally, we've had to pitch without shade, and that's been pretty unpleasant first thing in the morning. To be avoided if possible.
Mesh really is great to keep the air flowing when you want to close up the tent, like at night when it's hot as Helen suggests. If there are lots of insects around having mesh doors means you can still use the tent without either turning it into a solar oven or a lovely new home for some new friends. It's handy stuff mesh. I think some Icarus owners have added a simple DIY second mesh door using various bits and bobs. Sounds like quite a good idea.
You know, I reckon Vango have been reading these forums ...
