help
hubby and I want to invest in a bigger tent, we wre looking at the Vango Tigirs 400 DLX which meets all our criteris but doesn't have a fly net (totally no use in scotland in july!!) Our current vango beta 350 has lots of faults but at least it keeps the little perishers out. Can anyone help, we are looking for 4 berth, room to stand, lots of living space and front porch/awning for wet boot storage -oh and of course that all important midge net!
thanks

No tent is midge/fly proof. You have at some point open doors to go in and out.Having mesh panels on the doors and windows will help to cut down on the problem but you will still be prone to flying nasties entering.
Most Outwells have a separate zippable mesh layer to doors and on opening windows

The new Vango Icarus has fly mesh on the side door and front door, new for this years range (last year they only had fly mesh on the side door),
Also a new feature on this years range is the door zips across the bottom, an improvement from last year where there was alot of complaints about that.
The Icarus 500 is good for two to three people, and the 600 is fine for a family of four

Drop one of these near the door and you wont be bothered, they are great, we have 2 one for the tent and one while sitting around in the evenings, pop it on the floor amongst us all and we are fine.

There appears to be a misapprehension that Scotland is infested with killer midges.
The midges are only prevalent in certain areas of the country, just as they are in England and Wales, otherwise there are many of us who would not continue to live and work here. Every year without fail scare threads about Scottish midges are posted on UKCS, probably by people who have only been here once and have chosen the wrong site at the wrong time of year.
As has been stated in countless past threads over the years, do your homework before choosing a site and there is no reason why you should be bothered by midges.

Looking at the zoomed pictures on the Vango website, I'm not sure that they have zips at the bottom of the doors. They have definitely got a deep 'step over' but the zips still seem to be straight top to bottom. There also appears to be a velcro patch in the centre of the door (2 on the 600 model) below where a zipped door would be, if you see what I mean.
I'm happy to be proved wrong though.

I believe that you are right. But the addition of the mesh on the front door will help reduce the wind getting in.
The front door now seems very similar to my Minnesota; later editions of the Minny had the front door going much further down thus reducing the draft even more - I wonder why VANGO haven't learnt from Outwell's lessons and done this also.
Oh my mistake. I thought it was a zip across one but it's hard to tell from the pics. It'll be interesting to see them in the flesh when they get put up across the UK later in March.
There's no such thing as a midge proof tent unfortunately. You'll encounter them in any tent as they will get in via your hair, people entering and leaving the tent etc. If you can get a hold of one of those insect zappers, it might help a little bit. If you are careful about where you pitch too it can help as they tend to like damp shaded areas with no wind rather than an open pitch with a light breeze.

Yeomans have an outdoor display near us in May so we'll be seeing the new Icarus and, hopefully, the Airbeams there.
Just got to convince ourselves we don't need another tent.

hi everyone
Thanks for all the helpful replies. We've gone for the Vango Tigris 400 - the new 2011 model has a step over no gaps and mesh side doors, the outwell looked great but the vango is cheaper and bascially is a bigger version of our beta 350
p.s bernie 47 - I have live and camped in Scotland and yes the west coast IS filled with man and dog eating killer midges (we live in the lovely midge free eastern cairngorms)
