Hi Everyone!
Just wanted to introduce ourselves and maybe benefit from your collective experience when it comes to choosing tents. We are a family of 4 with 2 boys aged 11 and 9, hoping to become born-again campers after having a few years absence, we would love to get a cotton or polycotton tent, but our budget is quite tight so we have been scouring Ebay, as well as Oberlink. I absolutely love the Palamos 6 from Hypercamp, so much that I even have a jar in my kitchen with 'palamos fund' on the top
I don't think that we could stretch to a Bear lake, and I love the look of the pyramid tents, but I would welcome any advice you could give me about what to look for (or avoid) before I raid my jar!

Dont forget to keep an eye on Preloved and Gumtree also.

No doubt some more people will be along soon to give you some more specific ideas regarding tents quite soon!

Best to also post:
1 Budget you can go to.
2 Amount of bedrooms needed
3 Type of camping, ie. weekends, or longer jaunts away, or both.


Info such as that will give people more to go on as far as recommendations. Welcome back to camping!

Youll probably get lots of replies with tent suggestions but at the end of the day its down to what suits you best and of course what you can afford. I would advise that you go and have a look round some display tents before making a purchase if possible and also read the reviews in the review section. If you go for a recognised make you should be pretty much ok. I would always prefer to buy a second hand decent make than a new cheapy.

Hi Lellncraig & welcome to the forum

I can fully understand you wanting to buy cotton or polycotton. A cotton canvas tent will last 30 years if looked after - not sure about the polycottons as they haven't been out very long.

There are quite a few second-hand cotton canvas frame tents coming up on ebay at the moment. You can't really go wrong with a canvas frame tent. The only things you need to consider is that they take up a bit more space in the car than a synthetic tent, and you need to pitch it to dry if you pack up on a wet day (own garden, relatives/friends garden, local park or friendly local farmers field). The benefits far outweigh these two drawbacks though.

Welcome to the forum!

A canvas pyramid tent is a great choice and one you wont regret. Obelink have a good repuatation and the quality is very good. There has been a recent post that discusses the Palamos Here and one of the posters is Dutch (Lodewijk) who Im sure would help you out with any questions you may have. There are some lovely pics Here also.

Thanks everyone,
We are really looking for two bedrooms and we will be camping in the uk so somewhere to sit would be ideal, but we don't need huge living space like some of the monster tents have. We have a small trailer so space shouldn't be a problem, but drying out might involve some ingenuity! Those pictures look amazing thank you Tricky Tree. I see there is a Cabanon Guadeloupe on Ebay at the mo, prob a little on the small side maybe. Thanks again everyone for your advice and for such a warm welcome! BTW does anyone know why the Hypercamp Rosas 4 is suddenly listed as not available for shipping to the UK?
