Hi all,

I haven't been camping since i was a kid and now want to start going again. My wife is having none of it, so it looks like its going to be a dad/children affair. I want to start off by taking my 5 yr old and in a year or so my youngest 2 (twins who are are 2 at the moment).

I want something thats big enough so that as as the kids get older i dont have to keep upgrading - and who knows, i might one day convince my wife she doesnt have to have en suite all the time.

anyway, the horizon 6 has caught my eye and I wondering to go for the 2011 model on amazon for £185 - Horizon 6 2011

or for the older model with footprint and carpet for £199 - package

What do you reckon? I know its probably huge for 2 but the idea is that the whole family will come eventually. Is this tent a good choice?

Maybe with a nice big comfortable tent your wife may be tempted to come camping with you!   Sorry can't help with advising on the Horizon 6 as I dont know much about that one.  Just bear in mind that even though some tents say they are a 6 person one, they aren't always suitable for 6 people!  (as we just found with our latest terrible purchase!).  Definately get yourself to a tent place and get inside the tent if you can before buying.

I tend to go camping with our kids, their dad isn't too keen on outdoor living, although he does visit us and helps with getting the tent up or down!  My 5 year old loves it that much, that even though we are now home from a Bank Holiday weekend of camping, she has insisted on sleeping in her sleeping bag for the last 2 nights at home!

The image on amazon still shows the previous model, just in a different colour to the package you linked to.

The 2011 model can be seen on Gelerts Website, and you will see the differences with the over-door canopy, extra windows and different vent style. So if I were you, I'd take the package deal for the sake of an extra £15.

As the kids get older and need more room to stretch, you could invest in the porch as well.

Our Vango is a "6 man" tunnel tent in the same layout and practically identical dimensions as the Horizon 6, and usually just houses myself, OH and the dog. It would sleep and cater for four adults fairly comfortably in my opinion, or else mum & dad in one bedroom and the three kids in the other. In the meantime, the other end can be your storage/wardrobe etc as we do.

Hi There

If you check Go Outdoors site, have a look at the Zenobia 6, as this is the same tent rebadged, so if u wanted to have a look first, just pop into your local go outdoors.

As for the tent? Well, me and the mrs just got one (for the two of us), and took it to Wales for the 1st time last weekend. We got the footprint, carpet and the porch for it. Was like a palace, totally bug and draught free, didn't move an inch in the high winds - thoroughly recommend it! One of our friends joined us on the sunday, with her dog. There was more than enough room for 3 adults and one hyperactive mutt lol.

It was on offer the other week in Go, £149 for the tent and £130 for the carpet, porch and footprint. I would go with the package deal in your original post inc the carpet and footprint, stupidly good value IMO.

Hope this helps
Ian

That's really useful to know. I'll pop down to Go Outdoors to take a look. The tent is more expensive than the horizon but it will certainly be useful to get inside it and take a look.
