I'm looking to move on from my basic starter vango venture 500 and have really been drawn to some canvas frame tents on eBay. I need one that is 5-6 berth for me and the kids (wee one still in travel cot) and just wondered if you guys thought it would be possible to pitch one solo (albeit with a very helpful 6th old!)
Vango tent is now starting to show it's age and I love the shape of the frame tents, remind me of camping holidays in France and Italy when I was little!

My experience is that both OH and I can solo pitch an Antigua or Andorra (Cabanon 5 & 4 berth), it's a bit of a struggle for me to get the canvas on the frame but part of that is my lack of height! Neither of us - OH is 6ft 2 and strong) can solo pitch the 6 berth Athena.

The problem is the weight of the canvas and physically lifting it onto the frame (with the frame on its knees) which is tricky solo.

OH managed to trash a pole on one taking it down solo last year when he got hit by a huge rainstorm as he had the tent on it's knees ready to take the canvas off.

I know there are people who have solo pitched Athena sized tents but it's not something that OH can do even with his height and build.   If you have someone around to help you to lift the canvas onto the frame it's a lot easier.

If you could track down an Andorra or Antigua with a bedroom annexe you'd have the smaller tent with an additional bedroom.

I'm not sure how the canvas weights compare between Cabanon and other brands

If it's just the 3 of you a cabanon pyramid would be ideal? Easy to pitch as well

Bell tents are really easy to pitch yourself.

I'm not sure the budget would stretch to a bell tent sadly!

I can pitch both of our Cabanon frame tents on my own, and I'm a 5'4" 9st female.

The smaller 5 berth one (see gallery) is easier, not just because it's smaller, but because it has a canvas roof. The Elody 6 berth has a PVC coated roof which makes it much heavier to lift the canvas onto the frame.

One tip to make it easier to pull the canvas over is to lay your canvas out at home, fold it with the inside of the roof on the floor, then fold the sides in. Keep folding until it's the length of the bag, then roll it. When you come to pitch it, put the frame up & keep it on it's knees, unroll the canvas & lay it across the centre of the roof, then just unflap the sides and let them drop down. This way the roof will be in the right position, and you won't end up having to drag the canvas up over the roof & struggle to pull the sides out from under the roof canvas. Don't know if I've explained that very well

Good advice from JK98.

I pitch the Aruba (much the same as the Athena) on my own and a long time ago I posted on here both how to get it up and also down on one's own in a wind.

In principle it's a lot easier to pitch a frame tent than a big tunnel or dome but wind and rain is the problem because you have to be strong and tall enough to not just lift the (heavy, particularly if it's wet)canvas but to keep it under control as well.

It'a a difficult for me to say, particularly when I don't know your gender and strenth but I would say it's a bit risky for anyone who hasn't had a good bit of experience of handling canvas to put up a big frame tent single handed. Do you know anyone who's got one so that you can "have a go?"

The advice to look for a pyramid is good.

Take care

R

I'm a "built for comfort, not speed" 5'10" girl but as stubborn as I am enthusiastic!

I guess the only way to find out is to have a go. I'm not sure I fancy a pyramid, its the straight sides that appeal to me about a frame tent. Maybe I'll have a throw on an eBay cheapy and either persuade my husband to come with us or sell it on!

Alternatively I could get DH to come and pitch the tent and then go home again!! Hahahaha!

Well you're certainly tall enough to manage it. If it would be useful I can re-write my blow by blow instructions for pitching a big frame tent on your own.

Take care
