Hi all,

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, cant find the thread if it has and being a newbie I haven't had chance to wade through all the good advice on here.

We bought a new 2010 Montana 6 at christmas and just had our 1st family trip away this weekend. The tent was ace (as expected, thanks for all the reviews) however when the rain and wind really came down this morning it started to leak very fine spray from the roof.

This is the first time it's been wet and I seem to recall from my mispent childhood that tents need weathering. Is this the case with modern Nylon tents like my Monty ?

It wasn't condensation as we had a bit of that as well. Any advice on keeping that down in a monty would be appreciated too.

We had to pack up in the pouring rain and now the tent is in the garage waiting for the wind to die down so I can put it back up again to dry out. Any tips as to dry out a went tent (how long it can be left etc) would also be appreciated.

The best bit though was this was my Wife and kid's first "cold and wet" camping trip and their enthusiasm has not been dampened !

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Andy

Your tent shouldn't Leak, If you got it from Go-Outdoors then they should exchange it for you as they have a 12month guarantee.
Only Canvas Cotton tents need weathering.

Oh Welcome to the forum

If our Monty leaks like that I'll be taking it straight back to Go Outdoors to be honest, that can't be normal surely? Nylon doesn't need weathering, it should be watertight from the off as far as I know.

I must confess I'm dreading drying our tent out at home too if it happens due to it's size.

Condensation is reduced by a ventilation increase, temperature increase and less water output (people breathing, cooking). Anything to control those will help of course (apart from breathing, I wouldn't recommend you stop that :) )

Great that your families spirits haven't been dampened, to be fair it sounds like you've had a tough initiation, it will only get better!

Thanks for the above replies and welcomes.

It wasn't Go outdoors that we bought it from, it was Towsure but I hope they will be ok as they're a big long established company.

It was an old canvas tent from my childhood so that explains why I thought it might need weathering.

Sounds like I'm on the phone to Towsure in the morning !

Are you sure it couldn't have been condensation? If the ceiling has condensation on it and rain "drums" on the outside, then it can cause "spray". You do get condensation overnight, and if you had the tent closed up because of the weather that would make it worse and things like boiling a kettle even worse (think hot shower in tiled bathroom!). Having the vents open, no matter what the weather, helps.
As for drying, keep moving it around and don't pack away till you're sure it's dry.

If any modern tent leaks its more likely to be condensation than rainwater coming in (assuming you have got it pitched correctly).

I am not sure how it can be faulty really, unless the rain was coming in on a seam, and even then with a tent like the Monty I think its unlikely.

However, you will have paid a lot of money for it and I can understand why you are concerned. No harm in ringing Towsure and seeing what they say.

I guess the next trip can only be better! I would get the tent out of the bag and spread it out somewhere as soon as possible. Even if its only partly spread out in the garage or even in the house it will start to dry.

Thanks again for the above replies,

I did wonder if it was the condensation falling down, thinking back there were pools running down the outside but then darker patches where it looked like the fabric was getting saturated. The best way I can describe it is like when my waterproof jacket loses it's outer "beading properties" and the fabric gets saturated and turns a darker colour.

Although Mrs had brewed up and I had closed all the vents up tight against the forecast rain and wind, mmmm.

Its been pegged out flat in the garden (didn't fancy chasing it and the Mrs down the footy pitch) and that seems to have hepled, hopefully the wind will die down a bit and I can get her back up tomorrow to have a good dry out.

Thanks again, as always the "forum"  comes to the rescue, I can sleep a bit sounder now.

We love our Monty and it has stood up to some atrocious weather! When we started camping as a family (OH was a veteran, I was a virgin camper!!) I thought he was mad wanting all those vents left open, even at night! But, there is a reason they are they and a reason they have flaps on them and, for once, he was right! Hope the weather holds out so you can get it dry. Good that it hasn't put your family off too

if rain and wind exceed the hydrostatic head a fine mist decends from the roof

We bought our Monty 6 during a ferocious thunderstorm at Bristol Rugby club! We had gone to the tent display and this storm closed in so we sheltered in a Monty. We were so impressed with how it stood up to the hail storm and winds we bought one there and then.

It then went to France with us twice and withstood storms in the Auvergne and Alps without a twitch.

Hopefully it is just condensation, I would give it another whirl and be sure it is leaking before returning it as I think they are becoming hard to find this season.

Dear all thanks for all your replies, it does make sense for it be condensation related and it did come down heavy. We'll give it another go and see how we get on.
