Hi All

I need to purchase a tent at some point soon, going to a Millets tent show on Sunday at Sandown park but would be interested in any recommendations you might have.

Family of 5
3 Seperate bedrooms (2 sharing twice and 1 on its own)
Decent amount of height and space
Going to be doing mostly UK camping

I have seen a Vango 800 (i think it was called) which seemed to have enough space for what we require.

Budget up to about £450

Lee

A tent is personal, what one person likes then someone else will hate it.....

The best way is to look around various camping shops where they have tents on display, but don't forget to imagine them with all your stuff in them. They look huge empty but once you have all your equipment in they soon seem to shrink!

Good luck in yo ur search!

I've just gone through the same quest as you!!!

We went from Vango Icarus 600dlx, to Vango Samara 600, to Vango Maritsa 600, to Kampa Bamburgh and finally to Maritsa 700, which we bought yesterday with great difficulty as no one, including Vango, have any stock!!

If you read my threads you can see how we arrived at the decision and the great advice that people gave us.

Go outdoors have a 20% off voucher for members of their club (you can sign up easily for a fiver and it is effective immediately) which is valid on all tents this Saturday only. That could be a whopping discount, but don't bother looking for a Maritsa there, unless you are near the only three stores that have them. We thought we could grab a bargain, but not without a trip to Sheffield!

If you do decide on a 2011 Maritsa there is one on order at the place I got mine yesterday, she was expecting it in this week.

Hope that helps. Good luck !!!

Hi,

We bought a Kyham Montreal last year, it's a 6 berth tunnel tent with huge living space and an optional canopy. It took us ages to choose. I looked around a couple of sites and I started to make a list of what features I liked and I then went looking again armed with my wish list! Sadly I still did not see anything that ticked all the boxes, until I came across this one on the internet. Very few Camping shops have Kyhams on display. But our previous tent was a Kyham (it's great and is still going strong) but our family circumstances changed, so we required a different layout.

I would recommend the Montreal for sure. It is big, 5x8m but it's not intimidating to put up. (Although, you would probably need two people). But the large living area certainly pays off in wet weather, especially when you have a large family and visitors turning up! We had 8 people in there with all their chairs and tables and there was still room to easily walk around.

Obviously this may not be to your taste, but you did ask for recommendations!

There is a catch, it's now discontinued. However, we took a chance and got one from Somerset Camping at approx £260. (Think they are still in stock) You get a lot of tent for your money, and because it's a bargain the remaining money in our budget went on the  footprint and carpet. Which finishes off this good quality tent nicely.

Good luck with your search.

Khyam Ontario 8, around £300 with footprint and carpet. Bgas of space, an absolute doddle to put up and down - even in the rain (first hand experience).

Kampa Pendine 8 or Sandown 8 - if you go for the canopies and other extras going to be right at the top end of your budget but quality tents.

That said Ontario looks a good bet too, got a Khyam Quebec 8 ands thats a good tent, very similar size to the Ontario 8. Its out of production now I believe but there are a few left waiting to be snapped up.

why waste all your hard earned cash on a shiny nylon tent that will last about 5 mins buy a big second hand  canvas frame tent of e bay or somwere it will last you forever and you will be more indervidual by doing so

First off I have to disagree with 1975, What "nylon" tents are you talking about??? Do you mean "Polyester tents" If so I think a new polyester tent will last more than 5 minutes somehow, our Vermont is now going into its 5th season. Will a canvas tent really last forever thats a very very long time. I would never recommend buying a used tent off Ebay unless
A: It was from a reputable source
B: I could see it put up

Fame tents are bulky, heavy and take time to set up. Your choice of amazon 800 is spot on. Made from polyester. Ex tent and will with stand most weathers. The only problem is

1 : no longer made( can only buy second hand)

2 : pitch size ( to big for some sites)

Polycotton the way to go but exsensive new.

You can get a vango Zanzibar 600 it is the same as the amazon but in polycotton not polyester. Not quite as big but still big, I know I own a Zanzibar 600 and amazon 600. They no longer make but there is one on eBay at the moment brand new and not bad price £330. You also used to get a Zanzibar 800,the same as amazon 800. I would go with this Zanzibar 600 still lots of space for family and it is   NEW.
Hope this has not confused you because I have confused myself.......,.

oh so sorry "plolyester"  but still stand by what i say a canvas tent will outlast a polyester tent anyday it will be heavy but quality wise no comparison and there are some great second hand bargains out there and if looked after can last 20 years or more as for ebay i would want to see the tent up before i parted with my dollar to make sure it is as described and if all was well i would take it as most heavy items are pick up only and most sellers are quite reasonable or if not the preloved website worth a look lots of nice cabanon tents out there that were once very expensive but thats just my opinion and were all entitled to one and whos to say im right if we all liked the same stuff what a boring world we would live in
