...................................... and here is the said tarp - sheltering a group of us on a very wet evening in February - certainely not a sunshade
Without it we'd have all ended up in out own tents all evening as the rain was torrential and incessant - with the tarp extending the canopy of my Cabanon Adventure, we had a very sociable evening keeping dry, and to me, this is what camping is all about.
If you have a need or a desire for an 'add on' and the cash to buy it, then, why not?
First time I ever went camping was with three groups of friends. On the second day the heavens opened - I'd bought a quechua tarp on impulse a couple of weeks earlier. We got it up and it meant we could still all sit and eat comunally - a great buy that really enhanced the trip- without it we'd have all been sat in our individual tents - very anti social!
I now have a colemn porch that I leave my cooking area set up under, but of an evening I'm always sat under there with a cup of tea or a glass of wine - provides a bit of shelter but still able to enjoy the fresh air and stars.

As I mentioned in another thread. If someone is getting bothered about another campers equipment, tents, canopies etc. They cant be having much of a holiday themselves. There's a lot more important things to worry about.
On the contrary. One of the funniest things I have ever witnessed on a campsite happened at Silverdale a couple of years ago.
A group appeared with a minibus type vehicle with a flat-bed trailer attached. On the trailer were, what looked to me, trees. At first, I thought they might be a team of landscapers planting a new forest. As I watched them set to work, the trees eventually became a wigwam frame. Next, enormous industrial canvas sheeting were wrapped over and around the frame until (after a good four hours of seriously hard work) an impressive Tipi type structure had taken shape. They weren't finished yet, though. Down went carpets and in went a woodburner and soon smoke was billowing out of the top of the tent. I tell you, you could easily have lived in there permanently - the final offering had taken six hours, but it was certainly impressive.
Within forty eight hours they had dismantled the lot and moved on!
------------- Summer? What summer?
