Well I can't be bothered to read all the replies as they will probably be all the same I honestly think you have all missed the reason behind Arsenaldes ----- is that right?? Outburst it's ...... Because he's an Arsenal fan and obviously takes after that whinging manager Wenger cause that's all he does is moan or criticise other peoples ways and things they do !! As most have probably said sometimes they use porches etc and sometimes they don't much the same with people who have caravans sometimes they use a porch sometimes an awning sometimes nothing as I saw before and well said so I've bought the wrong house if I need to add a conservatory ??? I don't know why does it bug people about others stuff or has je just posted this to start a big chat?? On purpose??

disagree with you robnchar, we used our tarp for 10 of us to shelter under when the heavens opened as we were about to eat so it does have other uses than a sun shade.

maybe depends on the quality of tarp ofcourse

...................................... and here is the said tarp - sheltering a group of us on a very wet evening in February - certainely not a sunshade

Without it we'd have all ended up in out own tents all evening as the rain was torrential and incessant - with the tarp extending the canopy of my Cabanon Adventure, we had a very sociable evening keeping dry, and to me, this is what camping is all about.

If you have a need or a desire for an 'add on' and the cash to buy it, then, why not?

Seems like you're making assumptions without knowing 'why' folk have done what they've done.

Sometimes peoples circumstances change or an opportunity presents itself which is appealing..  I'm only assuming mind, I just bought the biggest tent I could lay my mits on.....

We bought the Verano DL extension to go with our Sunncamp Kansas 8 and having just used this for the first time I am very pleased we bought it.

Extension meant we kept shoes, kitchen clobber, cooking equipment out of the main living area; plus this became the main entrance to the tent which in the rain meant no rain coming into the tent every time we went in and out.

We don't have a canopy (except a Vango standard sun canopy we won at Christmas - which hasn't been used yet) and use a tarp as and when its wet with all our tents as a cooking shelter. We can justify and just about afford buying multiple tents.

However, I can see that the canopies and extensions can be a substantial advantage to some. They can avoid someone having to buy two tents - i.e. a large tent to provide that essential space for kids to spread out for longer camps (when limited space will set nerves on end!) and a quicker to pitch smaller tent for weekends when you can get away with less space and don't want to loose so much time with a large setup. Basically - use just the tent for weekends and add the canopy/extension for longer stays (1 tent, 2 options).

I guess that is what a canopy/extension does - it offers "options"...

Love our set-up and need no more tents or gear, so trying to stop looking!

First time I ever went camping was with three groups of friends.
On the second day the heavens opened - I'd bought a quechua tarp on impulse a couple of weeks earlier. We got it up and it meant we could still all sit and eat comunally - a great buy that really enhanced the trip- without it we'd have all been sat in our individual tents - very anti social!

I now have a colemn porch that I leave my cooking area set up under, but of an evening I'm always sat under there with a cup of tea or a glass of wine - provides a bit of shelter but still able to enjoy the fresh air and stars.

Well done arsenaldes you certainly got the responses you were after . Will your next post be about cooking in a tent next to a gas fridge whilst you have pitched 1 ft away from the next tent ,taking up 2 pitches , playing ball games and watching the dogs roam free !!

As I mentioned in another thread. If someone is getting bothered about another campers equipment, tents, canopies etc. They cant be having much of a holiday themselves. There's a lot more important things to worry about.

On the contrary. One of the funniest things I have ever witnessed on a campsite happened at Silverdale a couple of years ago.

A group appeared with a minibus type vehicle with a flat-bed trailer attached. On the trailer were, what looked to me, trees. At first, I thought they might be a team of landscapers planting a new forest. As I watched them set to work, the trees eventually became a wigwam frame. Next, enormous industrial canvas sheeting were wrapped over and around the frame until (after a good four hours of seriously hard work) an impressive Tipi type structure had taken shape. They weren't finished yet, though. Down went carpets and in went a woodburner and soon smoke was billowing out of the top of the tent. I tell you, you could easily have lived in there permanently - the final offering had taken six hours, but it was certainly impressive.

Within forty eight hours they had dismantled the lot and moved on!
