Hi,
Weve decided to downsize our Coleman Columbus 8 to a Montana 6, but at the mo they seem very expensive. So my question is, do tent prices fluctuate throughout the year?

If so can anyone tell me the best time of year to buy an Outwell Montana 6 for the best possible price?

p.s. Can anyone recommend a retailer.

Thanks for your help.

Usually around Winter when No one is buying or thinking of buying a Tent.

Someone Got one really cheap recently using the Go Outdoors Price match alongside 20% voucher

Boxing Day they were doing a full package for the Nevada M for roughly 150.00

Would say ,November through to January are always the best times to buy camping related products. Patience is a virtue..................

After doing a fair bit of research in this (I am a bit tight you see) I concluded the best thing to do was to make a list of favourite tents try and stand inside as many as I could to get a feel of them and then wait until an offer pops up for any of them. Don't be dogmatic about one type of tent you yearn for. You can bet your life because you want it no one will have it on offer. I wanted an Icarus 600 xl or a Monty 6. I ended up with something very different.

Out of season should be the very best time but shops and online dealers are forever having clear outs. Keep an eye out for ebay deals too. I got my Kalihari 10 for £130.00 that is allegedly a huge saving on the retail price of £670.00 (not that anyone in the history of the world would have paid that for it).

I tried buying out of season over last winter, I didn't see any fantastic offers.

There will be some bargains but you'll find there is much less choice, most of the stuff left is what other people didn't want so you need to think about why people didn't want it.

I was lucky and bought a nearly new tent from someone buying a trailer tent at the start of this season, as someone mentioned patience is the key.

There seems to be a constant "Sale" by one or other of the retailers throughout the year, so I personally haven't noticed prices dropping dramatically at any time of the year.

I would say the best time to buy a tent is when you see one you like - don't hang around hoping the price may fall as you could end up with no tent at all if they sell out.

The Montana 6 is a popular tent so there probably won't be many bargains to be had as the manufacturers and retailers know they will sell.
Best thing to do is just keep your eyes open and then pounce when the price is right for you.

The best time financially tends to be out of seasons, especially if you can find a tent that has been discontinued or changed dramatically for the next season as retailers are looking to get rid of old stock.

Generally the sales start at the end of the season but you might find a better bargain in a 'mid season' sale (some of us pot on special weekenders etc).

Two things to note are that Kampa are quite strict on their retailers re. pricing so they hold their value well, and Outwell keep stock short so you will find the most popular tents and accessories will nearly always sell out before the sale.

I would also think that you will find a lot less sale stock at the end of this year as everyone is tightening their belts. Sale prices aren't commercially sustainable and only exist to turn stock into cash before sitting on it all winter only to sell it cheap as old stock next year. I would imagine most retailers won't get left with the same stock levels this year as the state of the industry is more clear now and the optimism which occured last year will not happen this year, so you'll see less stocked availabel for mark downs.

We saw a tent we liked last year, and waited until September as I was told by a friend who buys tents for the scouts a lot of retailers have sales towards the end of season (September) as they don't like holding stock through the winter.

Sure enough, last September Go Outdoors knocked the Kalahari 10 right down and we got the tent for £200, porch £49, Carpet £30 and footprint £20.

Personally I would say if you see a tent you like at an affordable price to you, buy it, but if you are waiting to buy for camping next year then wait until September time.

We've had bargains at various times of the year.

We bought an Oakland XL in July last year for a bargain price (£280 for tent, extension and carpet). We then bought a Bear Lake 4 at the end of last season for a good price (now selling but won't lose out).

The Monty is such a popular tent that its quite rare to get a really decent discount on one. Go outdoors price match is probably your best bet. As for the Go Outdoors 20% discount they did announce that you couldnt price match with this offer

Are you dead set on getting a brand new one?

Early spring seems to be a good time for getting a second hand bargain on eBay, usally from people who are 'upgrading to a caravan', and they are often selling tons of camping stuff too.
