Hi the Darwins whats your budget, are you buying new or used and how long will you be using it for at one time, ie weekends, 1 week, 2 weeks etc.

1. Royal Denver 4, Discontinued too small and low
2. Vango Orchy 500, Theres a whole thread entitled the Orchy apreciation society.
3. Outwell montana 6. Very nice tent, bit big for just 3 people.

We have an Outwell Nevada M and thats a nice size tent, was in Go Outdoors today and saw the Outwell Oakland which I also liked another one is the ubiquitous Vango Icarus and its steel poled cousin the Calisto

I wont mention any K*MPA tents as I know someone else will

Hello - welcome to camping!  I can't comment on the others but we have an Vango Orchy 500.  We chose this at the end of last year as born-again-campers and not really knowing too much about camping!  The main reason is that I will be camping on my own with our two boys (9 & 4) for a number of 2 - 3 night camping trips over the summer holidays.  I can put the tent up on my own with very minimal help from 9 yr old.  It is certainly big enough for us all and we have also taken OH for a week in Lake District at Easter + i also went for the May half term for a week also with the boys.  For the week long trips we added the 2011 front enclosed extension which we use as a kitchen etc.  This frees up the main living area which was handy for a week. (More space for chairs, table, toys, clothes storage etc) I have now spent 16 nights in the Orchy this year and can't fault it.  Very simple to put up (max 20 mins) and take down plus good value, sturdy and spacious.  I would also recommend the extension for longer trips and we also bought the footprint and carpet for extra comfort/warmth.  Hope this helps you & happy to answer any further Orchy questions!!  Carolyn

PS - i should add that if you have a 5 year old, i would say a tent where you are all sleeping at one end would be better (you can seperate the areas in an Orchy if more privacy required) as my 4 year old rolls off his airbed/loses his teddy/just want to know i'm there etc etc throughout the night.  It would be a real pain if he was sleeping in a pod at the other end of the tent as i would have to get out of my cosy sleeping bag and walk across the tent every time he lost teddy!  In the Orchy you can just lean over and nudge him back on the airbed or find teddy etc. The Orchy 500 fits either 2 x double airbeds or 1 x double + a single airbed plus room for bags etc along the middle. Hope that makes sense!

Hi and welcome to UKCS, we are 2 adults and a 15yr old, and a 4 legged member This year we bought a new tent as we wanted something a bit bigger, we have a gerlet olympus 8 with canopy and we find it is just right for us. Sometimes the 15yr old has a friend come with us.

I think the best thing I can suggest to you is if you have a camping exhibition anywhere near you to go and have a look at the tents and that way you can decide for yourself.

Thankyou for the replies! Did agree once looking at the Royal it was small and low so i am going to aim for the vango although i do like the big tunnel type tents but im just fussy! Main reason being my hubbi is very keen on the camping idea....me.....not so much! So think it is wise to go for extreme comfort and a home from home feel or ill end up never wanting to go again! haha!

Glamp it up TheDarwens, Decent size tent, something decent to sleep on/in, carpet, decent chairs etc etc. The thing is if you buy something like the Montana, and im not saying buy one, youll have a decent tent with loads & loads of space so you wont feel cramped.

I had the same sort of issue a few years ago with OH not really wanting to camp but me and the boys did so bought a cheap 6 man tent plus a load of cheap equipment and we all went off for the weekend, At the end of the trip OH said if we are going to do this again I want a better/bigger tent, sleeping bag etc etc etc. We now take everthing but the kitchen sink

Hi,if you are not going to be pitching singlehanded..you're going to need as roomy a tent as possible as your 1.5 year old is going to get bigger, would suggest a seperate utility tent for cooking too,as toddlers have no sense of danger (from experience, won't go into that),If you can stand, walk around, sit comfortably and have windows to be nosey then you will probably find you will enjoy camping. Half the fun is choosing the tent, make sure you see as many as possible in the flesh first though as pictures can be decieving. Well that's my honest opinion anyway,Hope you find the right tent and have a great time!
