After being battered and bruised one stormy night in Glencoe, I have decided to replace my trusty old Sunncamp handy tent. It now sits in corner in the garage (I don't have the heart to throw it out!).
My choice of replacement was the new Vango Event tent. It has been advertised for a while but it is only just rolling out into the shops so I have one of the first (just thinking about quality control here and the debauchle with the airbeams, yikes!). Anyway, too late, its a done deal and it is pitched in my back garden enjoying a rain shower! I did a full review of it here and I have to say, first impressions are favourable! I did note a couple of niggly points in the review but overall I am happy I chose this instead of the never ending bidding war on a used Oklahoma for the same price.
ps if anyone in the Scottish central belt wants to give my old Sunncamp a good home, you are more than welcome to it. I wouldnt want to post it tho, its rather heavy

Ok the new Vango Event tent has been pitched in the back garden for a couple of days now and it has been raining fairly constantly. I am pleased to say that there is very little in the way of water ingress (just one or 2 isolated spots where the wind has blown it in under the groundsheet) so all I need to do now is test it in a gale and it will get the 10 stars
Yes Mantra, the pins are quite long so I am still playing about with them and trying to figure out the best way to locate them. At the moment I am undoing the bottom half of the upright poles, locating the pin then keeping my fingers out the way, snapping the pole baack into place! But even sitting in the back garden, raining and windy with only the small metal pegs holding the tent down, it feels solid! The steel poles are just a bit smaller in diameter to the Carolina poles but still heavy!

Thaks for that Jim. If there's any strength involved I'd be struggling. I had to get rid of a lovely little Aztec Hawk 3 tent because you needed brute strength to get the pins into the rings. Even OH had a job on attempting it.As he doesn't camp I had to sell it on.
Trouble is Mantra if you are looking for a steel pole tent, most I have come across all have a similar ring and pin system to lock the tent down at the bottom. I always worry my method puts too much stress on the material!

What a great looking day tent Jim. Do all of the windows come with blinds so you can roll them down if you want nosey neighbours peering in?

Hi Krazykamper, yes, the 3 large windows come with blinds which are zipped up both sides then when you roll them up, held in place with toggles. The 3 doors have zipped mozzie nets.I have it in the garden now drying out after the weekend downpour with the window blinds up & the 3 doors rolled up - it makes a great gazebo!
The weather started off well, then it sort of went to bits on Saturday night into Sunday!
There is a tremendous amount of usable space inside it. I even had 5 bags of firewood in there!
It performed very well in the downpour and in the morning there were very few tiny puddles (to be expected with a clip on groundsheet in the wind and rain!) Actually it was so good that I decided to sleep in it Fri and Sat night instead of the small dome I had with me.
Incidentally, and slightly off topic, the dome tent is from a company sadly out of business now called Ambience and wait for it - it has air bladders instead of poles! AND its about 10 years old! so eat your heart out vango!!

Great pictures, the Vango looks pretty good! I'm on the hunt for a decent day tent. So far I'm interested in this tent or the Outwell Oklahoma. Have you had the Vango up in any strong wind? It's looks pretty sturdy, I don't want to buy one to find it can't withstand typical windy camping weather in the Lakes or Wales!
I have a Vango Event Tent too and am mostly very happy wit is after applying a small modification to the top hooks.
The first tent had to be sent back as the stitching failed due to there being no give in the materials and, as you can see from the picture, a huge gap between the hook and the pole.
This I solved by removing the hooks, inserting a 2 inch diameter rubber into the tape loops and reattaching the hooks to the rubber loops each side of each tape. This extends the hooks, obviously, and the rubbers give a bit of tension. Hopefully the pictures make it clearer
I found it impossible to attach all the hooks without the simple modification.
Hope the weather is kinder to you at Glencoe for the rest of your stay!

We got ourselves an Outwell Oklahoma to use as a Kitchen tent for our 2 week holiday and what a difference it made..like others have said with wind and rain some puddles do appear on the groundsheet but no other problems ...got it off someone used once for £130 and well worth it !
