Can I just chirp up I LOVE my voyager, I just can't imagine camping without it, love the space you get. We find it easy to pop up, usuing takes 2 of us 20 min or 30ish for 1. Has the separate rooms if you wish or joined while kids are young. Bliss. I would only buy one more tent... ANOTHER VOYAGER!!!

Happy camping whatever you choose

Hi, bought a gelert horizon 8 a few weeks ago. The first time we used it we put the tent up on a sunny, breezy morning but in the evening we had heavy rain, thunder storms and it was blowing a gale. The tent stood up very well to the onslought, no leaks and it didn't blow away, so I don't think you'll go far wrong with the horizon 6. Definately a 2 man job to put the tent up and take it down, especially on a windy day. The more the merrier. Don't forget to buy the footprint, makes pitching the tent a lot easier. Happy camping

Hi Gear stuff seems to be amongst the best value at the moment as Go Outdoors seem to having one big sale after another. The model that has been catching my eye is the Mojave. That seems to me at least to look like the best value long weekender family tent they do. That is often priced at around £160 ish. I also have a soft spot for the Vango Icarus 600 and 600XL they are also on my short list of potential purchases for the future.

Armchair camper with more tents than I will probably ever get the use out of.

What about the Vango Calisto range - the 500 can be got for £200 which will take 2 double airbeds if necessary. There is also a 600. With 3 compact steel poles it is pitchable by one and given the wider middle pole and sloped front pole you get a good bit of headroom throughout.

Simply Hike has a good video of the range.

Have a look at the Coleman Coastline 6 and 8, plenty of room in both, two types of awning available, can easily pick them both up with full set of extras, like awning, footprint, carpet for £200ish. A few youtube videos about.

I'll 2nd the reply about steel poles, I've gone from fibreglass to steel this year and if it's windy steel is much nicer. Unfortunately it adds to the weight and the cost of the tent.

Another vote for the corado 6, but it's pretty much impossible to put up on your own due to the weight of the poles. It's fab once it's up though, we have two young girls and there is plenty of space in the sleeping pod for all of us and clothing! The living area is huge and the intergrated canopy is really handy.

Thanks for all the replies, really helpful advice.

After a good hunt around, I've joined the Hi Gear Voyager 6 fan club. Bought the footprint and carpet yesterday, then went back today and bought the tent. Shame the two Go Outdoors special offers didn't coincide but I ended up with all three for £188, which seems a good deal to me.

Pitched the tent in the garden this afternoon. Managed to do it (almost) solo from opening the footprint bag to inners hung and carpet down in about an hour and fifteen minutes, including a certain amount of deliberate faffing before I took the next step to make sure I'd got everthing right. As a number of you have said, it's an easy pitch and I'll be much quicker next time.

The only bit I couldn't manage on my own was the 'lift and attach' of the two main dome poles. I'm sure there's some advice on how to do this solo around here somewhere - off for a hunt around now.

I reckon the first 'proper run' will be early August. Here's hoping for some good weather.

Thanks again all!

hi and welcome to the voyager 6 club :-)

I pitch mine by myself, in about 20 mins now (its took about 6 trips to get it to this time).

I find the trick to getting the tent up, is to do the two large cross over poles first, attach these flat on the ground in hoop shapes, and attach them to the little pegs, then carefully stand inside the open main door at the front, and lift the whole thing up into an igloo (if you get what i mean), after that, spread the poles into a cross shape fully spread out, and loosely peg out (so it doesn't blow away!)
After that, do the front pole (across the doorway), and then the remaining two.
You'll need to then space the tent out and re-peg, and do the guy's.
I have found if you leave in the bedroom pods it is just too heavy to do by yourself :-(

To take it down, un-peg etc... and unclip all the poles, so they lie across the tent, and remove them in reverse order, doing this i find it doesn't blow much in the wind.

The carpet is lush by the way :-)

Good luck... and welcome to the gang !

Great advice, thank you - I'll give that a try next weekend.

The carpet makes the tent, it really does.
