We want to get another tent as our current tent is huge and, although great for longish holidays, it takes a while to pitch and we find that we can't always get it on a standard pitch. My brain hurts from looking at tents online and in real life but here's what we are after:

4 or 5 man (we have three kidlets but the two older ones could always go in a two man alongside)
Smallish and quick to pitch
Able to stand up in living area, and enough room for 5 of us to sit in and eat if its hammering down.
Has an awning on the front (not side) that we can cook in if necessary as I want to be able to not have to take the day tent.

I really like the look of the Hi gear Colorado but went to Go Outdoors today and the Colorado 6 is still huge and they didn't have the 4 on display. Its also looks like it may take a while to pitch.

Am I living in cloud cuckoo land that such a thing exists?

If you want a smaller, tent but still the other features then maybe something like the Kampa Fistral, and a 2 man tent

:-) The size of the many many campsites that wouldn't let us pitch our current 6 man dome tent with two sleeping pods (Aztec Asilo 6). I think the footprint is about 7m square. Standard is 6x8 or thereabouts I think.

I'm in love with our new tent which is a Kampa Frinton 5 as mentioned above. Our requirements were pretty much the same as yours (although only 1 of the children has arrived so far - we were planning ahead!). It seems to have loads of space inside for a pretty modest footprint because it's v. tall indeed. You can buy a canopy but it also has a very roomy storm porch which you could cook in if you needed to. It's a beautiful quality tent and v. straightforward to pitch.

The Outwell Oakland XL is pretty similar. A bit more airy but less provision for British weather.

If you are visiting sites with a pitch of 6 x 8mtrs then look for other sites, most i have stayed on are at least 10 x 8mtrs as a minimum, a lot of them do not have fixed pitch sizes

Our Vango Artemis 600 sounds perfect for you.  Not masses of space inside, but enough for a short break.  2 rooms, a 4 berth and a 2 berth.  Our reasons for buying were the same as yours - the big tent is just too big for anything less than a week.  But the Artemis is a doddle to put up and has an open canopy on the front which provided the extra space we needed.

I assume you mean the standard foot print is 6x8 (it sounds right to me). In that case you have a lot of choice, you don't need a smaller tent but a different shaped one. A tunnel tent that fits in that footprint has lots of space, sleeping might be cramped but not if you're planning to take a pup tent.

I'd say either Frinton 5, Oakland XL or Icarus 600 or Nevada . Agree the Glendale looks nice too

You need to decide on a budget and pole type etc and then narrow it down.
