Hi all,

new to the site, been looking for a family starter tent for a couple of months now. We are a family of 4 - 2 kids aged 10 and 7. Wanting quite a roomy living area with sewn in groundsheet,  Looking to buy second hand and these are the two we've narrowed it down to!  Just wondered if anyone had any advice or knowledge of either tent. We are complete newbies to the camping scene and have so many questions,  One of which was is there a restriction on width/length of the tent that campsites adhere to or is it just a case of ringing them beforehand to ensure our tent is suitable?? i no its probably a stupid question but one thats bugging me all the same lol.

Thanks in advance

Any six man tent will fit onto a standard pitch, it's when you get to 8 man and 10 man sized that you need to start thinking about that one.

I would avoid Skandika. What is it about the Diablo that you like? Is it the shape of it? A tunnel tent instead would give you standing height even in the bedroom areas. But then the smaller bedrooms are easier to heat as there's less air above your heads.

As far as I know the Diablo is an inner pitch first, with a seperate flysheet over the top. I'm not sure if it has a SIG (sewn in groundsheet) How about this Vango Colorado instead? You can leave the bedroom pods in while you're folding it up, you only need to put them in the first time.

I would personally go for neither as camping novices to be honest.

I would hunt down a tunnel style tent (much easier to pitch than the "multipod" style tents, and much more efficient use of pitch space)from a well known brand, Vango, Outwell, Coleman, Litchfield, Higear and many, many more.

Multipod tents are not as popular as they used to be, for very good reasons. Tunnel tents are hugely common now so you should be able to pick one up pretty easily. If you tell us your budget, you'll probably help us to narrow your choices down a little bit further too. Also, is it for long camps away, a week or two, or for weekends also? If used for weekends also, you definitely want an easily pitched tent.

Skandika? There are a few people on here that have bought Skandika tents and had no problems with them, but consensus seems to be "avoid."

P.S. Welcome to the forum, and there is no such thing as a "stupid question" on here! We all started where you are at the moment and people on here are extremely helpful!

Ask away, and someone on here is bound to know the answer and post a reply!

I personally, like Finnboy, wouldnt buy either. The Skandikas are a bit hit and miss regards quality, you may get a good one but equally you may get a bad one, I would only buy if it was a really cheap price.

The Diablo was a good tent in its time but not the easiest to put up for a novice. It also has a large "footprint" and as such there are campsites that do not have pitches big enough.

A tunnel or vis a vis is a much more practical tent and a lot easier to put up. Have a look at something like the Vango Icarus or tigris or any other brand name with the same designs

Hope this helps
