Hi folks,

Just got my bargain Hi-Gear Mojave earlier today and thinking I need to get a footprint for my new baby.

They are only £17.50 in GoOutdoors which seems ok but I don't have a membership card so its effectively £22.50...

This got me thinking, is it worth buying the official one, or can I get away with just using any old groundsheet and cut it to size?

So if anyone has any thoughts i'd be interested to know.

We have a footprint for the Vermont, but under the Monty 6 we just use a tarpaulin cut to size.

Over the past 35 years we have hadseveral different sized tents and use builders damp-proofing plastic and then fold the excess underto fit. Just make sure all the plastic is folder under the tent.

I have footprints for my 2 Outwells - still dont know why. I use builders plastic sheets for the rest. Must be getting lazy in my old age! Mind you, the membership card from Go is £5 so you would effectively pay for the card on your first purchase, then you have a full year to buy loads and loads more kit

Sorry if this is a stupid Q, but what happens if you don't?

Water gets in on the top of it. This includes fottprints that are larger the the base of the tent.

If the footprint is the same size or larger than the tent then water will pool between the two. The footprint groundsheet needs to be 2" smaller than the tent all the way round.

I use a cheap tarp from B&Q under the Licata 400 and use a proper Kyham one under the Ontario 8 (but that is only becasue it was thrown in as a freebie when we bought the tent!)
Both do the job!!

Cheers guys, homemade it is then.

BTW if anyone is looking for a tent then check out the Gelert Clearance on Ebay. My Hi-Gear Mojave was £100 from there :)

Hi We have a Outwell nevada l with a foot print and when we went  to Brittany a few weeks ago the footprint was sticking out one end.Needless to say one day after a heavy downpour of rain we had bad condensation forming on the inside of the tent for 3 days. When we packed the tent away there was a lot of water on the footprint-so much that a frog was laid in one of the pools of water he wasnt happy when we rolled the footprint up.Last week we went to Ord House for 3 nights -no condensation it had all be caused by the footprint not properly tucked under catching the rain and sending it under the tent for Mr. Frog.
