The poor user states that using the footprint allowed water to leak (think I've got that right) through the groundsheet into the tent. Surely this cannot be right on a new £1000 top of the range tent. Is this user error or a faulty groundsheet?
Hope they can get it sorted out

Maybe the tent wasn't quite positioned properly on the footprint. The review mentions very heavy rain and, if they were pitched on a slope or in a bit of a dip, it would be difficult to keep water out of the space between the footprint and the SIG.
Still, you wouldn't expect the groundsheet to leak on a so called 'premium' tent, would you?

If the footprint wasn't correctly positioned(ie,it was sticking out slightly)then rain would have run down the tent and onto the footprint as described by the tent owner.
We have always used a footprint and have never had a problem,we always double check to make sure the footprint is inside the tent area.

Putting a footprint under the hawaii should be easy as you pitch the canvas, then once inside lay the footprint then put the zig in over the footptint.
Last time i was away I saw someone pitch their tent on top of a 4m x 4m groundsheet, their tent did't have a footprint of 4m x4m and it rained like hell,i did warn them to fold the extra under the sig but they didn't listen lol

If you read the next few revies one lady does say that she is disappointed that it has the 'normal' ground sheet rather than the rubberised ones that the 2011 Monty has. I can only go by our Bear Lake. The ZIG is so thick that nothing would soak through there even if pitched in a pond! I have had the problem with water between the footprint and the ZIG, but that was before I was so well read on here! We often find that it moves a couple of inches whilst pulling all the poles upright and didn't think it mattered much. Now I know to make sure it is all tucked in I shall test it out and see how it makes a difference. It does sound like the Hawaii Reef has a poor quality ZIG though, which would cause a problem combined with a better quality footprint.
We were just deciding wether or not to get the hawaii reef which is our preffered layout with the porch area but the colour and the material quality between it and the lake tents swayed us to a montana lake.
The zig did feel of lesser quality but to say it would leak if sat on water i would strongly doubt that unless it was faulty.I've owned an SV8 since 2006 and had puddles under that tents ground sheet and only when there has been a puncture in the material has it ever let water through and the feel in quality between that and the hawaii's is chalk and cheese in the hawaii's favour.
We've Hawaii and its great. Because the Lake tents have become so expensive, these new Sun tents fit a gap between the plastics and the polycottons. We prefer the design over the Outwell Lakes. We got ours for £640 brand new.
The SIG is more like a normal one rather than an industrial strength rubber on of the wolf Lakes. I'd go as far as saying its probably thicker than the typical plastic tents. One of the reasons it's a cheaper tent I guess - but it does mean smaller pack size.
I think the footprint question is a potential problem with all tents - letting water get between a footprint and the ground sheet means it will not go away and will happily sit their steadily soaking the groundsheets. Eventually it'll soak through any tent floor given time. The Hawaii ground sheet has a HH 10000 I believe which is higher than most.
Reading the review - I guess the same would happen for almost all the tents on the same pitch with a footprint.
It's important to get the footprints positioned right. We had a slight dip and a fraction showing last weekend and the rain got under it so there was trapped water for a few days. Didn't come through though and had happened before on our old plastic tent. It might be a good idea for outwell to start selling them 5% smaller to guarantee they don't stick out - but I guess people will feel short changed. Next time we pitch I'm going to fold the edges under to make sure. This isn't anything to do with the Hawaii tent but to do with footprints in general.
