I've received a useful document about Fire Safety in Tentipi tents.. The useful bits are:-

Always have water and a bunch of twigs handy in case the fire gets out of hand. Keep a sharp knife to hand which can be used to slash the tent for fast evacuation.

Keep the fire footprint small.

Use dry wood which easily generate sparks, finally chopped wood gives less smoke and give more light.

Place stones or branches under the fire box so that it is raised above the ground. This way air gets under it and this ensures better burning which in turn means less smoke.

Do not leave the fire unsupervised. Do not burn more wood than is absolutely necessary.

When burning with an open fire, the ventilator cap needs to be open on the leeward side so that the smoke is sucked out of the tent. Make sure enough air is coming in and that it is taken from the side of the tent facing the wind. To keep maximum heat in the tent. open the ventilator cap as little as possible.

Thanks for the info from Tentipi. I have a Bison Tundra 4 Lavvu and this info is useful for me too. I have a small BBQ that has a vent and a grate in the bottom so it can be used for burning wood and this is what I'll be using for the time being.

Also, for fire with flues.... have you seen those ones that the Swiss army use? Quite reasonable prices and available on ebay.
