How quick do these fabrics suffer with sun bleaching as i have read mixed reviews. Ours has shown a little sign after the first 9 nights of camping. We had our new Montana Lake fitted with a Montana 6 awning and after taking the tent & awning down you can just about see a very slight line were the awning was fitted/covered. Dosen't bother me in the slightest as the tent is superb in every way, but thought it was worth a mention.

What have others found!

Andy

We noticed it on our tent, so we have used the NIKWAX on our tent,Got from GoOutdoors its a spray that

  • Maintains the water repellency tents and outdoor gear
  • Protects tents and gear against UV degradation
  • One application can double the effective life of gear
  • Gear dries quickly for packing away

As an example...when we had our Comanche Montana TT,which was TenCate cotton canvas. The front wall of the main unit was as new as we always had the awning attached, but the outside was very faded.
We had it 7 years, never treated it with anything and it never let a drop of water in.

One word of caution..if you decide to use the spray posted above, make sure you treat every little bit or you could end up with a very patchy/streaky tent.

As you have only used the tent 9 nights I would say treating it at that stage is totally unnecessary.

If at some point in the future it does need reproofing I would get a big tin of Fabsil and either spray it on using one of those garden sprayers or paint it on with a brush.

Saw these today, both polycotton Outwells. Probably been up all season but didn't expect them to turn into bell tent canvas.

They do seem to fade massively, but hey-ho. The Bear Lake 6 we've bought is a six month old ex-demo and when we compared it to the new front extension, it was like two different colourways!

We were advised to buy and use Fabsil, brushing it on and wiping it off with a cloth afterwards. Allow six hours curing time and then we should be good to go. This will boost weather proofing, and retain the colour (as best as possible). The plan is to weatherproof the main tent this year and then do the extension in about six months so that we theoretically have the same colour all the way around :)

    Hope that helps.

If you want to see real sunfading on a cotton canvas tent have a look at my TT in my profile pictures. The dusky pink canvas of the roof section was originally the same burgundy as the trim of the sun canopy, lol. Not that I mind...the TT is 22 years old for one thing and it's allowed to be going a bit grey at that age, and secondly it's a badge of honour to be seen in an obviously well used and loved unit, imho anyway!   The canvas is still totally waterproof btw, and there's never been a drop of Fabsil near it.

I noticed the 6m purple bell faded quite a lot after just 4 weeks in the sun

Doesn't affect the waterproofing or anything so I'm not really bothered by it fading a bit (it's still purple inside tho!|)

Well............ there's fading and fading. With today's colour fast dyes I was astonished at the 2 Outwell polycottons. I see loads of caravan awnings that are up all season and still retain their colour. Never anything like these - they are brand new, this seasons products.

Like the rusty poles issue it all points to profit driven cost cutting, and doesn't give us Outwell buyers a lot of confidence.

Most caravan awnings are acrylic not canvas.

Bear in mind the 2 Outwells in the phone will have been up since March, which is equivalent to over 20 weeks of camping.
