Hi,

Has anyone ever changed the flysheet on a kyham ridgidome xxl??? specifically any tips on how to remove the main pole assembly and refit??  any gotchas that you only find out after the event?

Cheers

Steve

Right here goes.

First go and watch the videos

Hub Replacement View Online Download
Main Pole Replacement View Online Download

Watch and watch again, dismantle  tent, start putting it together again, and when all seems lost,  watch them again

It's not that bad, once  you have taken your first joint off , it's straight forward until you get to the hub. Hardest part was removing the base plate from the hub.  Most technical part was putting the joint back in the hub, it is possible to get them in wrong way round, so take pictures  as you dismantle so you know which way is up.

Tools you will need,  tent peg, a rubber mallet and a tea cloth.  The tent peg for removing the joints, The mallet for the hub and the tea towel to protect the flysheet and to dry you tea cup which your OH will keep topped up while you perform the operation.

Great, Thanks...  i will have a good few watches of the clips before i attempt the swap.... will have to wait for the weather to pick up before carrying it out - that said, i could always use the local church hall and do it indoors :)

thanks again for your advice.. i will let you know how it goes :)

Indoors sounds good,  the beauty of the Ridgidome is that it will stand up without being pegged.  So you will have a good flat solid surface to work on and still be able to erect it to check it over.   And OH can still make a brew.  Looks like a plan

Well I never, I have a xxl that is about 11years old and the tought of a new fly sounds good as quite a few of the seams are starting to fail. However the flys listed seem to be for the newer models, not as old as the one we have. will they fit as all my poles seem fine and at £100 would be excelent value for a new tent.

Good question,  I am not aware of the frame changing size, yet on the Tent Spares  website it states for the 2005 / 6 . I would give  Khyam or tent spares a ring and ask.  I am also curious as to why it is only for exchange on a polyester to polyester.  Surely the polycotton frame will go to polyester.  Now if it was the other way round I could possible understand it as the polycotton fly weighs considerable more.

Hi,

I must admit to taking a little bit of a gamble here... I have been told it should fit with no major problems, and the cost of the flysheet against a new tent, I thought I would tame the risk. My main concern is the bedroom section height...

I do however have 3 backup plans if I have an issue:-
1) try and acquire new bedroom section poles and possibly inners
2) look out on eBay for a tent of the same age and swap the fly with that instead
3) flog the lot and start again, hopefully covering the cost of the flysheet!

I know this is a gamble, but if all fits I will be at least £400 in pocket :)

Once fitted I will let you know what the fit is like.

Steve

OK... after a shaky, nervous start we eventually thought in for a penny, in for a pound and went for it...

What an easy job! the poles only fit one way, and you can get them out with only one joint separation and removing the hub (that was the most tricky part - I never like hitting plastic with a mallet!)

Refitting the poles was a piece of cake!  and after about 30 mins the flysheet was swapped!!

i can also confirm that the 2006 flysheet fits perfectly on the 2000 pole set, the inners fit great, it is like a new tent! (I even gave all of the poles a good clean with soapy water!!!

I am a very happy man :) All in the replacement flysheet set me back £116... a real bargain when you consider a replacement tent is £550!!!

So Haggistent, i say if you want to refresh your tent without the cost of buying a brand new tent, go for it... i am more than happy with the results :)

Thanks for the advice Oldham :)

Well done    and thanks for coming back with the answer that the fly fits.  By the way you managed it a lot quick than I did.  Lets have a picture next time you camp

i will certainly post some pics..  we were quicker than I had planned to be because just as we started the heavens opened LOL...  as soon as we finished it dried up lovely!  left the tent up for a couple of hours in a nice breeze and glorious sun so it went away dry!!

As an added bonus, I bought a brand new ex stock annexe for the tent at the end of july, and it just so happens to be from the same year that the flysheet was made, so the colour scheme matches... *** BONUS ***
