I have followed all threads concerning canvas tents on this excellent site and i decided to become a member.

Coming from Scandinavia and consider myself an experienced camper (trekking/hagloef/fjeallraeven) my camp was based on something lightweight and 30 km a day..I have re located to central Europe and started to camp with wife and one kid..and now we are two. It takes some time to get used to the idea of a “campsite” J ...( born with the freedom of camp where ever and when ever)..Ok..you pack the car..you load family and gear..and you find a campsite to set up base..the last five years i used a Coleman..one of those “plastic” things..

Now we are 4...and i want the “real” stuff...i want to camp close to the sea..i want to visit the British islands..i want to camp in the Alps...3-4 weeks a year..

So the question is:.. A good..a very good 100% cotton canvas tent..4 persons. I like to be “static”..pitch and stay J

What tent do you good fellow’s recommend..and does anyone know how many grams the De Waard canvas is made off ... >300gr..or less...

Thanks for “letting” me and ask this question J

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Having looked at the various canvas types available back in 2008, I soon decided that it had to be "Cotton" for my fortnight campings in the South of France during July, photo in gallery.

A close contender was "PolyCotton" or Cabanon's "All Season Polyester" canvas, which is aruguable stronger and longer lasting than either "Cotton" or "PolyCotton"

The 5 person Cabanon Biscaya 370 "Cotton" (280g/m2) is sadly no longer available, although it's replacement the Awaya 370 using 1.5mm thick Aluminium poles, has a slightly heaviar "Cotton" canvas at 290g/m2.

The "Cotton" Biscaya uses 23mm Steel poles, although at the time the 320, 440,  and 500 Biscaya's were using 1mm thick Aluminium poles of 28mm, and there were issues with Aluminium poles failing, although quite rare.

Have a look at Karsten tents, great "Cotton" tents, but expensive.

De Waard tents are a lot sturdier than Cabanon tents. When a De Waard tent is set up properly you can't move the tent at all doesn't matter how hard you shake it.

De Waard normaly uses very heavy cotton from Ten Cate ( a very welknown suplier of cotton) 340 grams per square meter.

If you wan't a very good looking tent then you must certainly take a look at the new De Waard ''paradijsvogel" or in English  Bird of Paradise.

Thanks for all advice, much appreciated. I guess i need to take some time and figure this out. I am not a "tech" freak but i do believe that once i find the right tent..it will be "the" tent. Tent design seems to come with the producer..De Waard certainly has a reputation..so does Cabanon, ESVO etc etc...I prefer to pay for quality once..and then i just have to stick to my decision (our decision)..someone suggested to buy a second hand tent and try it out..perhaps that’s the way to go..Living in Central Europe all the continent is accessible easily...so the tent will have to take care of us at the Mediterranean and the costs of France...the Alps..and of course...the Highlands...

I have just camped in my new Esvo tent last weekend, it is such good quality and easy to put up, everyone was admiring the look and quality of my tent, the other 3 tents of my friends were not admired at all.
It was a little expensive ( would have liked the De Waard but couldn't afford one) but well worth every penny.
If money is no object, I would suggest De Waard, (I have camped in one and it is amazing) the quality is better.
I think you may have to take a trip to Holland to buy the De Waard, where as Esvo deliver to England for free and they do have an excellent delivery service.
Keep us posted as to which one you decide to buy.
