My in-laws are trying to buy us the Vermont XL for Christmas - so amazing, we were over the moon until we discovered it's sold out everywhere and the 2012 range are way over budget! Can anyone suggest anywhere else to look or an alternative that would be as reliable and brilliant as the XL for under £700?!

We're a family of 5. Any help would be much appreciated!

One for sale on ebay at the mo from a seller called alchemistic, it's listed as faulty but he sells Go-Outdoors returns and usually they're pretty much mint from my experience, gotta be worth a look cos will go for a fraction of it's worth, bear in mind it will probably come with no pegs though, but a minor thing to replace.Link below:

Thank you all for your replies - I'm sorry I didn't get back to reply sooner! I forwarded the in-laws the link to the Family Tent Shop - thank you so much for that!

That's really good to know about the ebay seller - we'd looked at that one but thought it was a bit too risky as could have had massive faults and we aren't renowned for our tent expertise...we're going to get better at that when we have a better tent though!

Hopefully the in-laws have bought it, we're dying to get on with lots of lovely camping next year - it'll be a real luxury as we've all shared the bedroom in our little tent for the last two years!

I had a 2011 Vermont xl,second time out it ripped the stitching from both sides of the rear roof pole, really disappointed. Was repaired under warranty so I got rid!!
bought a 2011 Salinas l from outlet camping and got a front extension thrown in for £205 and over moon.
Any way back to your dilemma, have you thought about the vango Monte Verde 900 or 700.or the maritsa 700?these are sizeable tents and will easily do the Vermont xl's job,these also have ground sheets built in throughout.
This may give you food for thought but I suppose there is every chance these tents will have been already looked at!

Thank you all, we just had the vermont xl delivered from the family tent shop! I haven't heard of anyone else who's had problems with it so will be crossing my fingers!

We've booked our first trip at the beginning of April but will do a test run in the in-laws garden first!

Claire, we got the Vermont XL last year too and loved it! We took it for a weekend break, long weekend break and a full week and it did us proud every time! Takes ages to pitch because there are so many pegging points, but it's so worth it! We didn't really get much chance to sit outside it last year because the weather wasn't really warm enough, so spent a lot of time in it and that's where it comes into it's own because there is so much space! Love the wardrobe bit, it's a lot bigger than I realised and easily hid everything away like coats/boots/shoes/toys/cupboard for clothes and towels and of course had the rail to hang everything else! It really is awesome! Enjoy!

hi claire , good choice i have the vermont xl , brilliant tent the space is huge you will not be dissapointed . it takes me and the wife 1 hour 20 mins from unloading to sat with a beer ha ha.... get the carpet and footprint when you have the funds well worth it.

look on you tube at the yeomans camping ie vermont xl pitching video its the best and quickest way we get ours up in 25 min .

me again claire forgot to mention tent pegs , throw the plastic ones in the bin and get 56 rock pegs thats how many to peg it out cooorrrrrrr yes that many trust me on this one , im a vermont specialist ha ha

Haha, yeah, we ditched the plastic pegs for rock pegs, but I'm sure we got nearer 100!

I think it takes us nearer 2 hours to pitch the tent, but I also think that included putting stuff in it and for longer breaks you do, of course, take more stuff. Actually getting the tent itself 'up' took a lot less than that of course. xxx

Where did you get your rock pegs? I see lots on ebay but not sure which ones are genuine?!

We're thinking of being brave and getting an EHU lead and connector... the man in a local camping shop assures us it's easy!

Thank you for all your tips, we were lucky as the footprint came with the tent but we'd love to buy the carpet at some point when we can afford it. I can't wait to try it out now!

We got ours from Go Outdoors, good value and excellent pegs. Just the Hi Gear ones I think they were. As for the hook up, the guy in the shop is right. If you can plug in a TV or phone charger at home (for example) then you can plug the connector into the hook up on site. It really is just about that simple! Just make sure that you do buy from a reputable shop and not eBay to be sure that it's not a home made one - I know there'll be reputable dealers on eBay but I think the general advice on here is to buy from a store? Again, we got ours from Go Outdoors.
